Sounds From a Town I Love (2001)
Sounds From a Town I Love originally aired on television as part of the massive "Concert for New York City: Live" special, along with short films from Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Kevin Smith and more. Woody's short film is a beautiful little ode to NYC done in a typically wonderful fashion. The entire film, which lasts under five mintues, consists of people walking through the sidewalks of New York City while talking on their cellphones. As such, it is a virtual feast of one-liners, and Allen's first direct response to the world (and NYC in particular) in the wake of September 11th. If you missed the original airing of the film (and the concert), fear not: it is currently available on DVD. Allen's film is in the first half of the second disc, introduced by John Cusack.
If you'd like to read Woody's reponse, in interview form, to the September 11th events and its aftermath, I highly urge you to read this excellent interview done with U.K.'s The Guardian in late 2001. I will update this page if more information ever becomes available (dates of shoot, cast list, etc.), but I doubt much more info will come out than already has. Still, a vital part of Woody's filmography and a vital cultural document of our now changed world.
