Really, The Avengers was more of a surreal spy game than SF, although it crossed the border on a regular basis.
In the main, The Avengers chronicled the adventures of John Steed, gentleman spy, and Mrs. Emma Peel, his associate. Mrs. Peel was not his first associate, nor his last, but definitely of the longest standing. What separated The Avengers from precursors and knock offs to follow was not only the quality of writing (generally outstanding), but the fact that the hero and heroine had style to spare and the actors who played them did too.
All manner of strange and bizarre people populate Great Britain, if you watch the show, involved in all manner of strange and bizarre activities, plots to take over the world, and criminal enterprises. But don't worry, Steed and Mrs. Peel are more than a match for the best of them. It often looks tight, but they always come out triumphant, rarely using much beyond their own resources and there's not often bullets involved.
And, in typical British fashion, there must be humour. Situation appropriate one liners abound (and very rarely of the groan variety). Additionally, there is a pun based subtitle for every episode relating to the story itself more than the title - generally along the lines of "Steed does this, Emma does that" or vice versa.
I'm not certain that I've seen every episode, although I've seen many of them at least twice, but I'm starting to get a hankering to pick up the DVD sets. I wonder how I'm going to sneak those into the house without my wife noticing.
