LST 1159 - USS TOM GREEN COUNTY REUNION

- ALL HANDS CALL TO MUSTER -

Ship’s company will muster on the main deck of the USS Washtenaw County in Portland Oregon the weekend of September 20, 2002 with a plan of the day calling for holiday routine.

PORTLAND OREGON and the USS Washtenaw County LST-1166 were picked as the destination for our second USS Tom Green County ship’s reunion after it was learned the vessel was alive and in the process of being restored. Captain Bill Brown, owner of the 1166 shares our enthusiasm and is opening her bow doors in welcoming our reunion guests. Captain Brown and his crew, consisting of the Portland Living History and Pacific Northwest Historical Groups, will be on hand to greet us dressed as US Navy personal and US Army Infantry.

A private bus will transport our group between the hotel and the 1166 all day Saturday September 21st for inspection tours of the ship.

Crewmembers interested in helping with the ship’s restoration work are invited to arrive in advance of the reunion, or stay after, to lend a hand. Volunteers are offered a bunk aboard ship during the work party but not during the reunion.

THE PORTLAND MARRIOTT DOWNTOWN HOTEL is an elegant establishment situated across the street from the Willamette River and within walking distance to Riverfront Park, Maritime Museum, the Esplanade, yacht basin and abundant shopping. The Marriott has offered our group a discounted room rate of $89 for a single or double room that would normally cost $129 - (if a lower price occurs during the event dates you will be charged the lesser rate). Reduced room rates are guaranteed for the nights of September 18th through the 23rd if reservations are made by August 30th - after August 30th reservations will be based on space and rate available.

When calling Marriott’s toll free reservations number (1-800-228-9290) it is very important that you identify yourself as a member of the USS Tom Green County Reunion and ask for our special rate. Failing to notify the hotel of your association with our group could result in an overcharge or our group not receiving credit for your participation. Marriot’s cancellation policy is 6 PM on the day of arrival. (Our hotel is the Marriott Downtown - 1401 SW Naito Parkway which should not be confused with the City Center Marriott.)

THE PORTLAND SPIRIT DINNER CRUISE boards @ 6:30 PM, Friday, September 20th. The river cruise is very popular therefore it is important you submit your registration early to ensure you don’t miss the boat. The number of seats available are limited and the sign-up deadline is August 1st. After that date our guests will be added to the passenger list according to availability. The uniform of the day for this event is casual evening attire.

REUNION DEADLINE & REFUND POLICY The reunion committee will be ordering caps, tee shirts and making other final arrangements the first week in August, therefore you can take advantage of a $5 registration discount plus ensure you don’t miss out by mailing prior to August 1st. Those making a reunion cancellation before August 31st 2002 will receive a full refund. Cancellations after that date will receive a refund minus any costs incurred on behalf of the canceling party.

A MUG SHOT not to exceed 2”x 2” in size taken during the era you served aboard ship is requested along with your registration. This will be pasted onto your name badge so your shipmates will be able to compare your current mug with the one you proudly wore in your navy days. Crewmembers failing to submit or bring a photo to the reunion will be given extra duty and have their overnight passes secured by the ship’s MAA!! The MAA will also be on the prowl for Crewmembers not wearing the proper dinner banquet uniform of coat and tie.

USS TOM GREEN COUNTY tee shirts, sizes small through XXXL and embroidered ball caps are being made available for the Portland Reunion. These should be ordered with your registration, as extras will not be available.
