Tai and Sora Forever

This is perhaps the most popular coupling with Tai, though Tai + Mimi and Tai + Matt couplings are rather popular too. I like Tai and Sora because frankly I can't see Tai and Mimi together, and though Tai and Matt together is an interesting idea, it will only exist in our imaginations, for even if the writers for the series decide to actually go for that kind of thing over in Japan, like they did in many other anime, Foxkids will never show that here in the U.S. Also, there are some reasons to support the basis of a Tai and Sora relationship unlike the other couplings mentioned.

This wonderful Taiora pic was sent to me by Elisa Rome. Thanks a million Elisa. I could just stare at Tai all day, and wish I was in Sora's place. [sighs dreamily] Tai sure does look good in that shirt. [Drags herself away from the picture, then comes back to stare some more] Yeah, well if that doesn't convince you of the wonderfulness of Taiora, then I don't know what will.

First of all, Tai and Sora have history and similar interests. They both knew each other before their fateful encounter with their digidestiny (how cheezy did that just sound?), so they were pretty close already. They also both like soccer (the best sport in the world!!!), though Sora seems to have given it up for tennis in season two. Damn you Sora, first you lead Tai on, and then you drop soccer??? What the hell is wrong with you???

Some specific evidence of Taiora started showing themselves in the series early on in season one. Tai said she was pretty cool for a girl, which really doesn't imply that he likes her, but it's a start. Then in the episode where Datamon kinapped Sora he started crying because he couldn't rescue her, which is rather significant. After they were back in the "real" world, Sora decided to go to the soccer field because Tai might be there, and then towards the end of the series, Sora fell into a deep depression because she thought she let Tai down. [Of course Matt had to be the one to help her out of the depression, but frankly this is the only real Sorato moment in the whole series.]

What really diminishes the hope for any chance of Tai coupling with people other than Sora is what happened during the middle part of the Digimon Movie. Since the Digimon Movie is really three movies in one, this one would be Our Wargame if separate. I know this doesn't count as much because it's only a movie and the animation was simply terrible, but it must have had some impact on the course of the series. In the beginning of Our War Game, Tai was emailing Sora a letter apologizing for an argument they had. "Dear Sora, I'm sorry about what happened. I haven't felt this bad since I accidentally threw up in your hat and didn't tell you about it before you put it on. I know our relationship has been a little stormy lately. You say you love thundershowers, so what's a few raindrops between friends? Love Tai" He saw he put love Tai at the end, but immediately realized the mistake and quickly told himself he meant to put "from Tai". Then Kari walked in and asked what he was doing. He covered up the screen really quickly and became really embarrassed about it. Then cute little Kari told him if he wanted to send email, he should click this button, and clicked the send button for him.

Tai freaked out and said he couldn't believe Sora was going to read his email. Then the computer told him it wasn't able to send it (this was because of the evil digimon that was taking over the Internet), and then he was like, "What! You can't send my email! How is she supposed to read it?!" and got really mad. you try to tell a girl you're sorry.." Sora was still really mad at him too and thought he was going to send an email to her but he didn't (but he did), and kept on saying "stupid Tai" throughout that whole part of Digimon the Movie. Then when the evil digimon was defeated, she received the email he sent in the beginning of the movie, and said stupid Tai again, only this time she was saying it like she was going to cry for joy. Of course the email was a lot less um, poetic in the original Japanese version. Basically all Tai says is 'I'm sorry, let's forget the whole thing'. Tai doesn't debate on whether or not to send the e-mail because of the 'love Tai' since he never put that there, at least intentionally. According to Lelola.net when Kari came in the room he turned around, hitting the keyboard with his elbow and accidently put it there. Kari sends the e-mail for him before he gets a chance to see the heart. Sora does smile and look real happy at the end though though when she gets it.

Her hats just keep getting weirder and weirder, ne? I have no idea what ne means, but it sounds good.

The rumor about these two is that they date and even kiss in season two. My only response to this is I'll believe it when I see it. I think that the creators of Digimon were smart in not stating right out who liked who, creating more of an interest in the characters because we, the viewers, are allowed to interpret the relationships the way we want. This is evident in most of the fan fics of Digimon. In season two the game of who-likes-who is much easier to understand. Davis loves Kari, TK likes Kari, Jun likes Matt, Matt hates (well, hate's a strong word) Jun, and Yolei likes Michael, Ken, and any other boy that's cute and not a jerk. ^_^ The season one children are basically stuck with the same ambiguous romantic lives so far though.

Sigh. So much for the not stating right out who likes who. In "A Very Digi Christmas", one of the better season two episodes in my opinion, Sora and Tai have a splendid little conversation, which Pan-Chan from Lelola.net was able to provide here, with some editing from me.

Sora: Wow! This is so exciting! People are already lining up for Matt's concert.
Biyomon: Don't worry Sora! We'll be sure to get good seats. Especially when you bring him these homemade cookies!
Sora: [softly] I hope.
Tai: Sora, wait up!
Sora: [embarrassed] Oh, Tai. [trys to hide the present]
Agumon: Something smells good!
Gabumon: Matt's busy getting ready, but I'll take those to him. Mmmmm...
Biyomon: I bet you will - no way! You'll eat the whole thing yourself!
Gabumon: I resent that! I'm on a diet!
Tai: So... umm... Sora? Are you going to the concert with anybody? I mean... not that it matters to me... just wondering...
Sora: No, I want to be available in case Matt is free afterwards...
Tai: [understandingly] Oh... I see... Matt, huh?
[Sora squirms]
Tai: [put his hand on her shoulder] It's ok...
Sora: You're not mad at me Tai?
Tai: No, of course not. [gently pushes Sora towards the door] Now get in there and say 'hi' to Matt for me!
Sora: Thanks Tai...
Agumon: The least you could do is leave us the cookies!
Sora: *smiles* I'll tell you what. I'll make some special ones just for you. [goes in to see Matt]
Tai: I'll be waiting... thanks...
Agumon: You know what Tai?
Tai: What?
Agumon: You've really grown up.

Like I said, the producers of the show in Japan seem to have decided they were through with the ambiguous romatic lives of the digidestined and I suppose this might be because of the fact that this is the last time they shall appear. The weird thing is, all signs up to this point showed that Sora liked Tai, but he might not like her, or just really didn't care. Now he's making a bold move by asking her out and she says no. Anyways, disregarding all flaws in charater continuity, I think they pulled this off quite well. I would much rather see this "rejection" of Tai than see nothing at all between the two. It shows that Tai does have feelings for Sora, and that she, well, there was a reason her conversation with Tai was shown instead of a conversation between her and Matt.

Of course, marrying Matt and Sora off to each other was not exactly what I had in mind. I hate Bandai, I really do. The American distributors weren't really happy with that pairing I can tell since they didn't say Matt and Sora were happily married and had kids in the dub. They probably thought the audience wouldn't agree with the pairing and they were right about that. The Matt + Sora pairing has a very, very small following. So small it seems non-existant. But it's out there and it's members are apparently into the Wicca arts. How else do you explain this Sorato pairing? Taiora, Taito are more popular than that crap. Just 'cause everyone likes Matt best and Sora is the most sane girl on the show doesn't mean they gotta put them togther. They have absolutely no chemistry. Sorato lovers, please direct all flames here
