Addis Tribune

Les Echos
French-language paper printed in Bamako. Appears to publish semi-weekly. Only a few stories from each edition appear on the Web.


Morocco

La Vie Economique
French-language weekly paper from Casablanca with a circulation of about 30,000. The paper has more than just business news.

Tunisia is using the Web to lure tourists, and part of the effort involves making available daily Internet editions of the French-language La Presse de Tunisie and the Arabic-language Essahafa newspapers in Adobe Acrobat PDF format.

A nice daily paper in Abidjan. Archives go back to January 1997.

Ivoir'Soir
Evening sister newspaper of the morning Fraternite Matin. A bit more entertaining than its counterpart.

Le Jour
A daily French-language paper in Abidjan, Le Jour puts a few stories online and has an archive of news back to December 1996. The paper's pages are part of the Africa Online site.

Notre Voie
Another Abidjan-based paper. Has a small archive.


Kenya

East African
Weekly newspaper in Nairobi. Published by The Nation group. Has an interesting maritime section.

The Nation
"The newspaper that serves the nation" covers Nairobi and the rest of Kenya. "The Cutting Edge" is one section worth looking at, particularly if you enjoy stories about government corruption and other injustices.


Madagascar

Midi Madagasikara
Daily French-language paper published in Antananarivo. Navigation is a bit confusing. Has a small section in the native Malagasy language.


Mauritius

L'Express
Daily paper for Mauritius. Part of La Sentinelle Ltd., a media group with other print and broadcast interests. Among these is L'Express Turf, a review of horse racing.

Le Mauricien
Good-looking on-line edition of daily French-language paper. Offers an English summary, too. Home page for the publisher lists other publications.


Namibia

The Namibian
Windhoek-based daily newspaper. The news section is updated daily, but other sections are behind schedule.

The Guardian
Liberal, independent daily paper in Lagos.

Post Express
Daily paper in Lagos that boasts of its independence. Nicely designed online presence.


Sierra Leone

Concord Times
A leading newspaper in Freetown, the Concord Times has been published since 1992 under the motto, "Excellence and Objectivity."


South Africa

Cape Business News
Covering business and industry news in the southern tip of South Africa since 1980, the Cape Business News is a monthly newspaper. Besides the current month's news, the Web site also offers background information on the business environment in the Cape.

Helderberg.com
A weekly published since 1928, The DistrictMail has enhanced its print product with a Web site that's dubbed the Helderberg.com. Helderberg is a region east of Cape Town. The publisher, Somerset Press, also produces HelderMail.

Independent Online
Gateway for a number of Independent Group publications, including the Cape Argus and the The Star.

Mail & Guardian Best of the Net
The Mail & Guardian, based in Johannesburg, South Africa, was the first African paper to go on-line. The paper's Web site features news from around Africa, plus a South African angle on the computer world.

Rapport
An Afrikaans Sunday newspaper in Johannesburg half owned by the Naspers group. The unadorned site lets you download an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the front page (hint: click on the word "Rapport").

WOZA
This is an experiment in online business journalism in South Africa. WOZA began in November 1996. The site is free, relying on quality journalism to draw readers and advertisers.


Swaziland

The Swazi Observer
Daily newspaper in Swaziland. Also publishes the Weekend Observer.


Tanzania

IPP Media
Web site for a media company that owns several Tanzanian news and information outlets, including The Guardian and N newspapers.


Zambia

The Post
"The paper that digs deeper" has a straightforward Web site with interesting daily coverage of both Zambian and regional news, sports, and entertainment. The online archive of the paper goes back to October 1995.

Zambia Daily Mail
"We serve the country without fear or favour" is the motto of Zambia Daily Mail. Note: Some of the sections of the paper don't always appear up to date. The paper also publishes the Financial Mail.


America - Caribbean

Aruba

Diario Online
Web site for Diario, a daily Spanish-language paper in Aruba.


Cuba

Granma
Official daily of Cuba's Communist Party. Also publishes weekly Granma Internacional in five languages, including English.


Jamaica

The Jamaica Gleaner
At this point, the only Jamaican newspaper on-line. But if you are at all interested in this island nation, its history, and its place as a regional powerhouse, the Gleaner is a good source of information. Part of the Go-Jamaica site.


Puerto Rico

El Nuevo Dia
Big graphics seem to slow down this otherwise good site by one of Puerto Rico's best daily newspapers. The site is in Spanish.

Vieques Times
Calling itself Puerto Rico's only bilingual newspaper, the Vieques Times publishes monthly in English and Spanish.


St. Kitts

The Democrat
Here's a reminder that the Caribbean islands aren't just a place for fun in the sun. Real people there have real lives and real problems. The Democrat is located in Basseterre, St. Kitts.


Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad Express
Daily newspaper in English. For stories on the hip and the offbeat in Trinidad, see the Vox section.

Trinidad Guardian
A competitor of the Trinidad Express (see above), the Guardian's site has more news on it, but it's not as much fun as the Express. It's good to see the competition, however, and fun to compare how the two publications cover events.

Belize, the Central American country once known as British Honduras, is a relatively obscure place from a U.S. perspective. The weekly Reporter will give a taste of what happens in the country.

Honduras This Week
With a focus on travel, entertainment, and culture, this English-language paper has a good Web site, although it sometimes is difficult to separate advertising from editorial content.

La Prensa de Honduras
Billing itself as the largest circulation independent daily in Honduras, La Prensa has a Spanish-language Web site with a simple, straightforward design.

Montreal Gazette
An English-language daily, part of the Southam chain. Has a nice travel section.

Ottawa Citizen
Rather than a page full of teasers to news stories inside, the Ottawa Citizen presents a straightforward index of its content. It's not pretty, but it works.

The National
The Southam chain's attempt at a national daily newspaper for Canada. For fun, visit the Diversions page for comics and puzzles.

Peace River Block Daily News
This newspaper is based in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, a town best known as the place where the Alaska Highway starts.

Toronto Globe and Mail
One of Canada's leading newspapers, the Globe and Mail presents a comprehensive site that will keep the reader abreast of national events as well as news around the Toronto area.

Toronto Sun
The Sun is a proud tabloid that bills itself "Toronto's other voice." Check out features like Max Haines' Crime Flashback or read about the Sun's 25th anniversary.

Winnipeg Free Press
Winnipeg, the heart of Manitoba, is served by the daily Free Press. The paper's Web site, unfortunately, does not do justice to the printed version.

Not the greatest graphic design online, but the paper does offer a simple structure that's easy to follow.

Washington Post
Very current, very searchable, a joy to read, the Washington Post has made the transition to the Web with style.

El Nacional
A well-done online newspaper, to a point. The paper presents the reader with a list of headlines. Click on one and it seems nothing happens. But wait...scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll see the story. Apparently the stories are called from a database. That's fine, but the presentation does take a bit of getting used to.

Cambodia

Phnom Penh Post
An English-language paper published in Cambodia's capital city. Not updated since May 1997.


China

China Daily
An English-language newspaper based in Beijing. Not the most exciting read, in part because so much seems to be official government news.

Hong Kong Standard
Good coverage of how Hong Kong's dealing with reunification with China. You'll also get good background about Hong Kong's active business community.

Inside China Today
Online-only news site for China buffs, from a Western perspective. Created by the Prague-based European Internet Network.

People's Daily
Unless you have Chinese fonts and know how to use them with your browser, you won't get much from this site run by the official Communist Party daily in Beijing. But it's interesting to look at nonetheless.

South China Morning Post
All around one of the best daily papers in the region. And for the funny and weird side of the news, read Spice.


Indonesia

Surabaya Post
You'll need Indonesian language ability to read the Surabaya Post, but the images can at least give you an idea of what's going on in the nation.


Japan

Asahi Shimbun
A leading Japanese daily's English-language site. You can also read the paper in Japanese if you have the correct fonts.

The Japan Times
The Japan Times gives you both daily and weekly news summaries, as well as a number of other features to peruse, including a cartoon.

Yomiuri On-Line
The Yomiuri Shimbun is a leading daily newspaper, based in Tokyo, with circulation topping 10 million. Includes an English version online.


Malaysia

The Star
Online since 1995, The Star was the first Malaysian paper on the Web. The paper is based in a suburb of Kuala Lumpur.


Philippines

The Philippine Star
A well-designed on-line edition of the English-language Philippine Star in Manila. This is a relatively new publication, dating only from 1986, but it has risen quickly to be one of the top papers in the country.


Singapore

The Electric New Paper
Online version of Singapore paper aimed at a younger readership.

The Straits Times
For news of Singapore and around Asia, The Straits Times is an excellent resource. The link isn't to Singapore, however, but to a mirror site in the U.S.


South Korea

Korea Herald
An English-language daily based in Seoul. I've found that connections to the site have been intermittent.

Chosunilbo
The English-language version of Chosunilbo. If you have the correct fonts, you can read the paper's Korean home page, but with all the graphics it tends to take a while longer to load.


Taiwan

A leading Chinese-language newspaper. Offers a summary of its daily coverage in English.


Thailand

Bangkok Post
An English-language daily paper with good coverage of the capital city. See especially Bernard Trink's column, Nite Owl, wherein he writes about his take on various subjects and sums up night life in Bangkok.


Vietnam

Saigon Times Daily
This site is really just an advertisement for the daily English-language paper published in Ho Chi Minh City. You can view sample articles or get a free, two-week subscription to the paper's e-mail edition.

A daily newspaper published since 1961, The Kuwait Times appears to post online versions a couple of days after the printed version.


Qatar

Gulf Times
If you want to keep up on events in the Persian Gulf region, the English-language Gulf Times is one option. If you read Arabic, have Arabic fonts, and your browser is properly configured, you might want to view the paper's sister publication, Al-Rayah.


Turkey

Hurriyet
A fine-looking Web site. You'll need Turkish fonts to read this paper properly.

Turkish Daily News
In English, the Daily News offers both free and pay-per-view online versions.


United Arab Emirates

Gulf News
In the Gulf region, this is one of the best-looking and easiest-to-navigate online papers. You can read the Dubai-based paper's current edition's top stories or search an archive

The daily Telegraph is based in Calcutta and has a great slogan: "Unputdownable."

The Times of India
One of the best papers in the world and one of the nicest ones on the Web. Complete coverage of India and its place in the world. The paper's sister publication, The Economic Times, offers good coverage of Indian business.


Maldives

Haveeru Daily Online
If you read Dhivehi, the Haveeru Daily will fill you in on news of the island nation of Maldives. An English version also is available. Maldives is actually more than a thousand islands scattered in the Indian Ocean.


Nepal

Selections from the daily English-language daily Kathmandu Post and other Nepalese newspapers are available through this site.


Pakistan

Business Recorder
Describes itself as "Pakistan's national financial daily." Based in the port city of Karachi. The paper's Web site is very busy-looking, even though it's not (thankfully) graphics intensive. It's also a very comprehensive site. If you're looking for business and finance information about Pakistan, this is one place to begin your search.

Daily Jang
A quick-loading site, and readers don't have to worry about having Urdu fonts or configuring their browser, because the paper has converted all stories to graphics.

Dawn
Says it is "Pakistan's most widely circulated English language newspaper." The Karachi morning daily is published by the Dawn Group. The site is well-organized and loads quickly. Readers get a summary of top stories with links to full versions. The site also includes a weekly news-oriented magazine.

The Frontier Post
An English-language daily in Peshawar offers a selection of news, sports, and business articles, letters to the editor, a cartoon, and some stories from The Weekend Post supplement.

The Nation
An English-language paper in Lahore with a no-nonsense site with lots of stories from the daily paper. I'll give the paper points for keeping its Web presence to a low-graphics standard, but it would be nice to see some photographs or images other than just the daily cartoon.

Nawa-i-Waqt
An Urdu-language daily published by the same group that produces The Nation.

The News
Bills itself as Pakistan's No. 1 English newspaper. As far as a Web site, it's nothing fancy. But as a means for readers around the world to interact with the publication, it's got several good avenues, including the Newspost section of letters to the editor and the Viewers Forum of readers' opinions on various issues. An archive of recent issues is available.


Sri Lanka

Sunday Times
Grab your coffee, boot up the computer, and read the Sunday paper...except this paper comes from Sri Lanka. An archive dating to February 1996 is also available.

Daily News
The leading English-language daily in the island nation. An interesting way to follow the Tamil Tiger story, although the paper seems to have an anti-rebel stance.


Europe - Eastern

Eastern Europe from the Balkans to the Baltics and including Russia and parts of the former Soviet Union.

Belarus

Belorusskaya Gazeta
A Russian-language weekly with a nicely designed Web site. An English service, Belarus Now, offers coverage of politics, economics, and finance. Background on the paper is available in English.

Minsk News
English-language weekly in Minsk. Slow to update it Web site.

Vecherny Minskt
Vecherny Minskt (Evening Minsk), in Russian, is a daily newspaper. The Web site offers some stories translated into English.


Croatia

Nacional
A Zagreb-based Croatian-language tabloid.

Vjesnik
Popular Zagreb-based political daily. Includes a useful and free archive.


Czech Republic

The Prague Post
An English-language newspaper, The Prague Post does a great job reporting on what makes Prague tick. The paper also has a North American mirror.


Hungary

Magyar Hirlap
A Budapest daily, the paper's home page is worth a look even if you don't speak Hungarian. The image map menu is rather puzzling...

Nepszabadsag
A leading daily in Budapest. Some English-language news briefs are available on the Hungary Around the Clock page.


Latvia

Diena
The largest daily newspaper in Latvia is the Riga-based Diena (The Day). Unfortunately, you need Latvian fonts to view this site to the greatest benefit. Even then, the paper's decision to go with a subscription-based database for full access is a bit of a disappointment.


Lithuania

Lietuvos Rytas
One of the largest dailies in the country, Lietuvos Rytas is published in Vilnius, the capital.


Poland

Gazeta Wyborcza
Daily in Warsaw with a nicely done Web site and good regional coverage.

Rzeczpospolita
A well-done online version of one of Warsaw's top newspapers.

The Warsaw Voice
An English-language weekly, the Voice is updated every Thursday. Its home page allows immediate searching of the paper's archives.


Russia

St. Petersburg Times
An English-language weekly based in St. Petersburg, which under Soviet rule was known as Leningrad. The paper reports on both the good and the bad in the city and throughout Russia, and has a good business section.

Borsen
A financial daily offering a comprehensive menu for the news-hungry, but some of the items require subscription to the online service.

Ekstra Bladet
Copenhagen tabloid that big on sports and entertainment, but not on news.

Jyllands-Posten
If you don't speak Danish, even clicking on "hjælp" won't help. But if you do speak Danish, the Jyllands-Posten in Copenhagen is a good source of news about Denmark.

Politiken
A top daily with a well-designed Web face. The site also has travel and job sections, as well as good weekly magazine, Politiken Weekly.


Finland

Helsingin Sanomat International
English-language online-only synopsis of a leading Finnish daily newspaper.

Norway

Aftenposten
Leading daily in Oslo, Norway's capital. Among features is Debattcentralen, a readers' forum.

Bergens Tidende
Daily paper serving Bergen. One interesting feature, for students aged 14 to 23, is stud.mag., an online service that helps locate schools where specific areas of study can be pursued.


Sweden

Svenska Dagbladet
A nice Web site by one of Sweden's leading dailies.

Der Standard
One of Vienna's top dailies includes a special section, Rondo, with lifestyle reports.


Belgium

Le Soir
Le Soir is a French-language daily published in Brussels since 1887. Special sections worth a look include L'Eco Soir, devoted to economics; Le M.A.D. (that's short for Magazine des Arts et du Divertissement), an arts and entertainment guide; Multimedia, a focus on the latest in computer and related technology; Auto, about motoring; and Le 7eme Soir, a weekend cultural and living guide.


France

Le Figaro
Front door for several different efforts by Le Figaro, including crossword puzzles, a publication for university students, and a feature on 100 years of the automobile.

L'Humanite
Official daily of the French Communist Party. If you want to discuss French politics, visit the message board, Librement.

Liberation
A liberal Paris daily with good international coverage and plenty of special sections online.

Le Monde
The New York Times of Paris. Among interesting sections is the one on film.

La Tribune
Paris daily with a busy and interactive site. Good stock market section, Les Marches.


Germany

Berliner Morgenpost
Good coverage of Berlin and the eastern part of Germany is what you'll find in this paper. The Web site's in German, but English speakers can get a quick lowdown on some of the day's happenings on the international page.

Bild
Hamburg-based Bild is into sensationalistic reporting, so some of the coverage here may be a bit too much. This is a colorful Web site that well reflects the printed product.

Suddeutsche Zeitung
Well-done Web site, known as SZonNet, for a leading daily paper based in Munich.


Gibraltar

Greece

Athens News
An English-language daily published in Athens, this was the first Greek paper to go on line. The electronic edition is a good resource if you're planning a trip to Greece.


Ireland

The Irish Times

Italy

La Repubblica
National daily newspaper. Has a text-heavy home page, but it's a fun publication nonetheless. One nice feature is a look at the front page of the printed edition.


Liechtenstein

The largest daily in one of Europe's smallest countries, Liechtenstein. The paper also offers the English site, Liechtenstein News.


Luxembourg

De Telegraaf

A nicely done and rich site, called Electronic Telegraph, by one of London's top papers. Requires registration for full access.

Evening Post
The British seaport of Bristol is home of the Evening Post. Among features is Terry Britton's Diary about growing up in Bristol.

The Express
Long-standing London daily is finally online, but for now you only get the paper's columnists. More is said to follow.

One of London's screaming tabloids, screams even louder (and redder) on the Web in its Mega Star site. Focused on entertainment news.

The Times
Respected conservative daily in London. This is the paper for which one of our favorite typefaces, "Times Roman," was designed. Requires registration for full access.

Northern Ireland

The Irish News
A nicely done paper in Belfast, Northern Ireland, that often offers an objective and critical look at events.

Scotland

Evening Telegraph
A daily paper based in Dundee, Scotland. The special section on sea angling is worth a look.

The Scotsman
Longtime Edinburgh-based daily paper. Some interesting features can be found in the magazine section.

The Sunday Post
An affiliate publication of Dundee's The Evening Telegraph and is one of Scotland's most popular newspapers. One fun online section is Stuff!, where you can play to win prizes and just learn about, well...offbeat stuff.

The Mercury
A daily tabloid format paper for Hobart, capital of Tasmania. The Mercury is part of News Limited, a chain that owns a number of big Australian papers, including the national daily, The Australian. Drawing from the editorial material from all of the company's newspapers, the Australian News Network provides a consolidated source for information.

Sydney Morning Herald
Sydney probably is best known for its odd-shaped bayfront opera house, but there's a lot more to the city, as reading the Sydney Morning Herald will show.

The nicest NZ paper online has to be this 8,620-circulation daily in Masterton. Good coverage of local and national news, plus sports.


Papua New Guinea

The Independent
Paper from Boroko with lots of political coverage. See the Beehive for local gossip.

Post-Courier
A good dose of PNG news plus insights into world affairs make this a good online paper. "The Drum" offers short items on various goings-on. The paper also has a mirror site in Australia.

The National
Located in Port Moresby, The National is a daily newspaper.


Tonga

Tonga Chronicle
Newspaper for the island kingdom. Not much on the Web site, unfortunately.
