"Got your tape and it changed my mind..."
Music has played a pivotal role in my life since I was just a tiny tot, singing "Somewhere Out There" by my windowsill late at night. Of course, I don't really do that anymore but I still find solace in music. Some may say that I have very picky musical tastes. Yeah, I probably do, but to me music is so important that I look for more than just a pretty face. Lyrical content is major component in what I consider good music. I look for music that I can relate to, that speaks to me. Talent level is also very important to me. A guy like Ben Folds, who tears up the piano with his feather-light fingertips garners instant recognition (it helps that he has a wonderful voice and great lyrics as well). With this in mind, these are my top five favorite bands (and one singer/songwriter for honorable mention)...

Radiohead
Radiohead is a band that I will forever have respect for. They've resisted commercialization and continued to evolve in their own way and shape. Their music touches on rock, as well as jazz, and electronica, as they further search for ways to express themselves. Thom Yorke may be one of the ugliest people on earth, but he's also one of the most talented and entertaining. O.K. Computer is one of my favorite albums of all time, as the song "Lucky" respectively vies for the title of my favorite song ever made. That song, and album, have greatly played influence in making me the person I am today.

Incubus
Incubus provides a savvy blend of rock, jazz, and reggae to provide some of the most entertaining music I've ever been exposed to. This band too has experienced the evolution of finding themselves through their music, as their is a definite difference between the tracks found on Fungus Amongus, S.C.I.E.N.C.E., Make Yourself, and Morning View. My favorite Incubus album is S.C.I.E.N.C.E., just because I feel that one is most my style.

Coldplay
Coldplay first emerged a few years ago with their breakthrough hit, "Yellow", which garnered critical and consumer recognition. I was one of those suckers who latched on to that song, bought the album, and was amazed and greatly impressed on what I found. With lead singer, Chris Martin's, eerily smooth voice and powerful lyrically driven works, Coldplay's initial album, Parachutes, was solid from beginning to end. Their sophomore effort, A Rush of Blood to the Head", was released after great anticipation in August of 2002. Coldplay proved to have a level of maturity comparable with that of Radiohead. Their sound on A Rush of Blood... belittles Parachutes in complexity and the band began to incorporate political messages in their work. Again, I was greatly impressed, and the result is a band that I sincerely enjoy and will continue to follow for years to come.
