![]() What is "Anamorphic Widescreen"?Anamorphic Widescreen is basically the standard that most new movies are being released (or re-released) in.
It uses more of the available resolution for picture information instead of black bars. DVDs store information
in a 4:3 aspect ratio, but many movies are in a widescreen ratio (1.85:1 or 2.35:1). Regular widescreen DVDs
would draw a black boxes at the top and bottom of the screen and fill in the rest with the movie. Anamorphic
widescreen uses the entire area for the image. But then, won't you see this stretched version when you watch
an anamorphic widescreen on your regular TV? The DVD specification was actually designed with this feature, so
all DVD players take anamorphic widescreen movies and squash them back down to the correct aspect ratio. That
means instead of storing the black bars on the DVD, they store information, and you can see a better picture.
