Makoto is introduced as the "karate maniac" and she is a fiery and active member of the group. She has some problems with school, admitting to Usagi that perhaps studying for a test would be a good idea ("Mercury's Mental Match") She and Usagi quickly form a close friendship...perhaps because Usagi felt she had someone to stick up for her. (Makoto was first seen beating the daylights out of a group of thugs who had cornered Usagi, and she alone supported Usagi when Rei undermined her authority in "The Power of Friendship"). After her initial appearance, where she seemed very aggressive, she mellowed a bit and showed a softer side.

In fact, Makoto seems to get less and less time devoted to her as the series progresses and I'd put this up to the addition of other characters like Chibusa, and the development of other villain stories and stuff. This is unfortunate because Makoto is a very cool character, and a very nice lady.

As Sailor Jupiter, Makoto controls the power of tunder, and her transformation and thunder attacks are very impressive.
