Michiru first appears in the Sailor Moon series in the last epsiode of Sailor Moon R, which was a teaser episode for the next season. At first, the Inner Sailors believe that Michiru and Haruka are evil because they appeared to the Inners during their dreams, and their identities were never revealed.

Michiru, along with Haruka were sent on a mission to retrieve the talismans which were hidden within the pure hearts of innocent individuals. Perhaps the hardest part of this mission was the fact that in order to retrieve the talismans, the bearer would have to die.

Michiru however, felt that the mission was too important to let feelings get in the way, despite the fact that she hated what she had to do in order to accomplish it. She and Haruka both silently accept what must be.

Eudial, one of Professor Tomoe's Witches 5, discovers that the Deep Aqua Mirror was carried inside of Sailor Neptune. She captured Neptune, then used that information to set an ambush for Sailor Uranus.

The attack worked. Sailor Uranus was dropped by arrows as she entered the area.

Neptune awoke in time to see that Eudial was threatening Uranus' life. She broke away from her bonds and came under the same attack that dropped Uranus. Sailor Neptune however showed extreme stamina and got back to her feet. Eudial attacks again, mortally wounding Neptune. The villain then shoots Neptune revealing that Neptune did in fact carry the talisman.

Seeing this, Sailor Uranus grabs the villain's weapon and destroys herself, thus revealing that she too held one of the talismans, the Space Sword.

At some point, Sailor Pluto appears and reveals the Garnet Orb, and she revives the other Outers, who then combine their talismans with the Orb to form the Holy Grail, which allows Sailor Moon to transform into her Super form.

Despite the cruel exterior that Michiru is forced to wear as she goes about her mission, she is a very caring individual. Despite the fact that Haruka resents Michiru for revealing her destiny as a Sailor, Michiru gave her a number of chances to forsake that and live her life as a normal person. This while fighting off a monster.

Michiru is an accomplished violinist, and she is a very complicated person. These aspects of her personality are overshadowed a bit by the fact that she doesn't get much attention in the series.
