Everyone has an opinion about Tuxedo Mask. There are shrine sites to him, and there are anti sites to him.

When I first started watching the series, I didn't like Tuxedo Mask. I came into the series thinking that finally I was going to see an all-women superhero group, which is a refreshing break from the cartoons produced in the US, where the main subjects are mostly men who have token women around them to try to draw in girls in the audience.

So, soon after starting to watch Sailor Moon, I began to notice a trend. The Sailors tend to get in over their heads against the big badguy and VOILA a rose lands on the battlefield near the enemy, and here comes Tuxedo Mask, who delivers a quippy soliloquy and then proceeds to beat the battle and thus win the battle for the Sailors.

It doesn't help that some of the Sailors fall goo-goo for him. Not very heroic in my book.

It also didn't help that Darien dumped Serena early in the R Series because of premonitions of danger. Rather than deciding that they should face the danger together, Darien breaks up with Serena until he can discover the nature of the danger.

Whether you love him or hate him, Darien and his heroic alter-ego are integral to the Sailor Moon series. He is the future king of 30th Century Crystal Tokyo, and as a monarch in the future kingdom, he alone is able to demand the respect of the Outer Sailors.

At the beginning of the series, Darien often made fun of Serena, calling her "meatball head." As they fell in love and became aware of their future together, the derogatory term became a loving nickname and after the R Series, the two fell into a very loving relationship.

As Tuxedo Mask, Darien supports the Sailors with his roses and his cane. Often, Tuxedo Mask will tip the battle enough for Sailor Moon to deliver the final blow to a downed enemy.

Tuxedo Mask also had his dark side. Mid-way through the first series, he was captured by Queen Beryl and subjected to mind control. He then was sent to defeat the Sailors, where he appeared as Prince Darien. Prince Darien however was not much of an enemy. While his plans were often more dangerous to the Sailors, his effectiveness was hampered by his constant arguments with Malachite. In the end, Sailor Moon was able to shatter Beryl's control over Darien in the final battle against the Negaverse.
