The Newham Family
First Generation
————————————————————————————————————————
1. James Newham. James is little more than a hunch. So far, he is the earliest discovered Newham I've found in the appropriate area, with the necessary circumstances. In the 1787 Census, he is found in Winchester, with no family, at least 21 years of age and owning one horse, mare, colt or mule and one "cattle." Depending on when James married, it seems Dewey would be one of his younger sons. Given the rarity of the Newham name anytime and anywhere in the US, it is quite likely the two are related. As always, any corrections are welcome.
Children:
2 i. Wesley "Dewey" T. Newham
Second Generation
————————————————————————————————————————
2. Wesley "Dewey" T. Newham. Son of James Newham. Born 11 Mar 1802 in Rockingham County, Virginia. Died 15 Mar 1883 in Rockingham County, Virginia. Buried in Linville Creek Cemetary, Linville, Virginia. Occupation farmer, teacher, physician. He first married Ann Moore (or Morgan?), 14 Dec 1822 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Born 11 Apr 1797. Died 13 May 1860. Wesley was a teacher in 1872 in Pendleton County, West Virginia. I assume Wesley received the nickname "Dewey" when he married his second wife Eusebia. One of my sources, who supplied me the information of the first marriage, was unaware of this name, so it would seem likely.
They had the following children:
i. James M. Newham; Born Circa 1824 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. He married Sarah nee unknown, Circa 1845.
ii. George T. Newham; Born 4 Jan 1829 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Died 6 Jul 1872 in Ray County, Mo. Buried in Wakenda Cemetary, Hardin Mo.
iii. Elizabeth E. Newham; Born 1833 in Rockingham County, Virginia. Sources Robert L. Brock. Could also be Elizabeth C. Newham
iv. Maria R. Newham; Born 1835 in Rockingham County, Virginia. She married Andrew J. Kennon, 1866. Could also be "Carie" instead of Maria. Likely, as Newham is not a German name.
v. John M. Newham; Born 1836 in Rockingham County, Virginia.
3 vi. Samuel Kline Newham
vii. Mary Amanda Newham (Twin); Born 1841 in Rockingham County, Virginia.
viii. William P. Newham (Twin); Born 1841 in Rockingham County, Virginia.
He second married Eusebia "Seba" Miller, daughter of Alexander Miller III & Ann Matthews, 1860/1863. Born 1835 in Cook Creek, Rockingham, Va. They had the following children:
i. Sarah "Sally" Annabel Newham; Born 1863. She married Henry Luther Rexrood.

4 iii. Susan Virginia Newham

3. Samuel Kline Newham. Son of Wesley "Dewey" T. Newham & Ann Moore. Born 21 Jun 1838 in Rockingham County, Virginia. Died 16 Oct 1905. Buried in Wakenda Cemetary, Hardin, Mo. Samuel and his family moved to Ray County, Mo after the war. He married Frances Shirky, daughter of David Shirky & Catherine Bowman, 17 Oct 1865 in Rockingham County, Virginia. They had the following children:
i. Edward H. Newham; Born 1866 in Rockingham County, Virginia. It's likely Edward moved to Lafayette County, Mo.
ii. Catherine A. Newham; Born 1868 in Rockingham County, Virginia. She married Taylor Kimbrough, 2 Oct 1890 in Ray County, Mo.
5 iii. Alelia Henrietta Newham
6 iv. David W. Newham
v. Hattie V. Newham; Born 1874 in Ray County, Mo. She married Ellis W. Keim, 7 Jan 1896 in Ray County, Mo.
vi. Annette Eugenia Newham; Born 31 Aug 1875 in Ray County, Mo. Died 26 May 1899 in Ray County, Mo. Buried in Wakenda Cemetary, Hardin, Mo.
vii. Margaret M. Newham; Born Apr 1877 in Ray County, Mo. Died 1962 in Ray County, Mo. Buried in Wakenda Cemetary, Hardin, Mo. She married George F. Temple, son of William Edgar Temple & Catherine Hogan, 14 Mar 1901 in Ray County, Mo.
7 viii. Samuel Gideon Newham
4. Susan Virginia Newham. Daughter of Wesley "Dewey" T. Newham
& Eusebia "Seba" Miller. Born 18 Jun 1865 in Pendleton, WV. Died 20
Mar 1933 in Mount Jackson VA. She married John Solon Bowman, son of William
Bowman & Sarah Rosenberger, 27 Mar 1890. Born 14 Oct 1855 in Bowman,
VA. Died 27 Apr 1922 in Mount Jackson VA. There has been a good deal of
confusion regarding Susan and Matilda. There are two theories. One is that
the two might have been twins, the one dying in infancy, likely, as twins
crop up on both sides of the family. The other is more elaborate. I’ve
heard many stories of Susan changing her name from “Ginny” or “Jenny,”
and know of letters between Susan and her brother where he fussed at her
for changing her name. There seems to be a fondness for elaborate names,
or at least nicknames that seems to have started with their mother Seba.
So it is quite possible that on a whim, Matilda - or Ginny, Jenny or Virginia
- eventually changed her name to Susan.
After their father’s death, Susan and her sister Sally went to stay
with their mother’s sister. Aunt and Uncle George Harper. Susan’s sister
Ada went to live with another uncle, William Harper. Several of the Miller
sisters married Harpers.
During the 1920s Susan had a persistent, frightening dream of an enourmous
machine coming through the valley, taking all the young men and killing
them. She later interpreted the dream as World War I. Her son George did
return from WWI, but died after his return of diabetes and rhespiratory
complicatoins from breathing mustard gas. They had the following children:
8 i. George Harper Bowman
ii. Sarah Lou (Lew) Bowman; Born 5 Sep 1892. Died Mar 1893. Buried in Lantz Cemetary. Sarah died from digestive problems at six months.
9 iii. Willie "Will" Florence Bowman
10 iv. Winnie O'Neil Bowman
v. Charles Dewey Bowman; Born 8 Jul 1898 in Louden County. Died Mar 1899 in Loudon County. Charles died in Loudon County when he was seven months old. Due to winter weather, he was buried in the garden. Trees and flowers planted at the site are still maintained by present owners. After his death his mother Susan, then 34, began to gray. Charles was named after Susan's father (Dewey). He died of whooping cough and diptheria when he was seven months old.
11 vi. Floyd "Scrub" Leslie Bowman (Twin)
vii. Lloyd "Abe" Gilbert Bowman (Twin); Born 7 Dec 1899. Died 27 Oct 1918. Buried in Pleasant View Cemetary, Mount Jackson, Virginia. Sources Jackie Green. Lloyd was the twin brother of Floyd and nicknamed "Abe" because he was poor and thin like Abraham Lincoln. Lloyd died of the flu and is buried with his younger sister Fannie. She died within twenty-four hours of him.
12 viii. Mildred Virginia Bowman
ix. Fannie Catherine Russel Bowman; Born 3 Sep 1905. Died 28 Oct 1918. Buried in Pleasant View Cemetary, Mount Jackson, Virginia. Fannie was named after a close friend of Susan's, a black lady of Buchanan, Virginia who thought no one would believe the child was named after her. That's why Susan gave Fannie her friend's full name, so there would be now doubt. Fannie died of the flu within a day of her brother Lloyd.
