regarding Cobb lineages, and so many inconsistencies were found with regards to the spelling of the name, for the sake of consistency, the "s" has simply been dropped from most of our pages. However, the "spelling" issue is an important issue, since anyone doing research on Cobb lineage will most assuredly run into both spellings. This issue is best expressed and simplified by James W. "Jim" Cobb, (a descendant of Ventner Cobb) when he stated in an email that "The "S" on Cobbs was not dropped until the mid 1700's, and not all of the Cobbs' dropped it even then." |

provided to us by John A. Fields great-grandson of Elledge & Amanda (Cobb) Shull John advises us that he received much of the info through correspondence, in 1966, with a John B. Cobb, of Independence, MO, who had put a great deal of effort into the research. THANKS, CUZS JOHN & JOHN, FOR SHARING! The name Cobb is believed to have been of ancient Celtic origin and to have been either given to or derived from the City of Cobham, England. The actual meaning of the name is obscure. It is found in ancient records in the various forms of Cobb, Cob, Cobbs and Cobs. Families of the name were established in Devonshire, Lancaster, London, Oxfordshire and various parts of Northern England at early dates. One of the Cobbs had an estate settled upon him in Bedfordshire about the middle of the twelfth century in return for his services in the Battle of Hastings. The Cobbs held many high positions of honor and trust in England, and the family was a large and influential one at the time of the American emigration. Many Coats-of-Arms have been given at different times to the various branches of the English family of Cobb. Cobbs of Bedfordshire used "a bird between three feathers;" Cobbs of Kent County, "Ranpant leopard and three cocks;" Cobbs of Ireland, "arm brandishing sabre;" Cobb of Norfolk, "a swan's head holding a fish;" Cobb of Oxfordshire, "an elephant." |
