The Double Headstone
for

Robert & Nollie Grant

Located at Longwood Cemetery
East of Ponca City, Kay County, Oklahoma

Photos
December, 1999

taken and provided to us by
DON LONEY
(husband to Robert's & Nollie's niece, Beverly {Womack} Loney)
Thanks, Don, so very-very much!

The music
now playing is a Gospel music medley, entitled
"Amazing Rock,"
which features "upbeat" versions of the sacred Hymns,
"Amazing Grace" and "Rock of Ages."
No disrespect towards the deceased is intended,
it's just that Robert and Nollie would NOT want
music to cause you sad feelings when you think of them.
Remember, they are together again!
Rejoice that they are together AND in the arms of God!

This view is the East side of the headstone,
the side you see when you face West and are
standing near the foot of the graves.

Further below is photo of Robert's military marker, which is located at the foot of his grave.

The Poem
on this face of the headstone was written by Robert's & Nollie's daughters.

It begins on Robert's side of the stone, ending on Nollie's side, and says,
"DADDY'S WAYS...BYGONE DAYS...
OURS FOR JUST A WHILE.
MOTHER'S PRAYERS WITH US ERE',
LINGERING...LIKE HER SMILE."
The lines about "Daddy's Ways" are taken
from a song by that name, written by Bobbie,
shortly after Robert's death.
Patsy wrote the lines about "Mother's Prayers"
especially for Nollie's headstone, in rhyme
with the part about their dad.
The artwork on Robert's side of this face
of the headstone depicts his acoustic guitar
in the foreground, with musical notes
streaming from it. Something was simply
"missing" about him if he didn't have a guitar
in his hands. The artwork was done from a
photo of one of his actual guitars.
(A depiction of his electric, 40s-model Gibson
"F-hole" guitar is on the other side of stone.)
The background depicts Robert in a small boat,
fishing a tree-lined river, something he loved
to do, especially with family and friends.
The artwork for the birdbath on Nollie's side
of the stone was done from a photo of the actual
birdbath that Nollie so loved to watch from out
her back door, when many varieties of birds
visited the bath. In the foreground is Dogwood
blooms (of special significance to Nollie),
birds in the branches, and streaming musical
notes depicting the songs of the birds. The
background depicts Nollie in her yard watering
the flowers that she'd so anxiously watched for
the blooms of every early Spring - and excited
as a kid on Christmas every single year she
spotted those first blooms!
The large sun symbols are pointed reminders
of the "sunny" personalities of these two people -
to make us smile whenever we remember them.

This view is the West side of the headstone,
the side you see when you face East and are
standing near the head of the graves
with the headstone between you and the graves.

The West Face
of the headstone
On this face of Nollie's side of the stone,
the upper left portion of the artwork depicts
the hand of God reaching down to take hold of
one of the hands reaching upwards towards Him.
Below the artwork, the words, which are taken
from a line in a Gospel Hymn, say,

"Take my hand, precious Lord.
Lead me home."

Below the words,
the artwork depicts a church
with music streaming out of the steeple,
and a Bible in the forefront.
Nollie was a Pentecostal Holiness Christain
from the age of 19 until her death at age 83.
The artwork and wording are in remembrance

~ of her unwavering faith
that God would someday take her
to her heavenly home;

~ of her love for
(and her zestful and soulful participation in)
Gospel music; and

~ of her devout belief
in the teachings of the Holy Bible.

On this face of Robert's side of the stone,
the upper right portion of the artwork
depicts a man standing at Heaven's gates,
waving his hand in welcome. Below the
artwork, the words, a line from
Gospel Hymn, "The Eastern Gate," say,

"I will meet you,
just inside the eastern gate,
over there."

This song was done at Robert's funeral, at Nollie's
request, by close church-friends who loved Robert very
much, and who sang a beautiful rendition of the song.
For years prior to his death, Robert & Nollie attended
the Sanders Family Bluegrass Festival, McAlester, OK,
held every year in June. One of Robert's favorite groups
was the "Sullivan Family & Joe Stuart."
Robert always deeply admired and was visibly moved by
Joe's emotive singing of the song, "The Eastern Gate."
Robert died in May of 1983, therefore wasn't at that
year's June festival. But word got back to Robert's
family that, through an anonymous special request,
Joe sang that song, but first announced that it was
"in memory of a loyal fan, Robert Grant."
Some of us feel that perhaps Robert was "there" afterall.

The artwork in the lower left portion depicts
music streaming from the guitar, that is most
rememberd, regardless of other's he owned,
as "Robert's guitar," a 1940s-model
F-hole Gibson. The artwork was done
from a photo of that actual guitar.
The center wording
is lines from the Gospel Hymn, entitled,
"The Meeting in the Air,"
adapted as follows:

"There is going to be a meeting in the air, in the sweet, sweet by and by,
We are going to meet you, meet you there, in that home beyond the sky,
Such singing you will hear, never heard by mortal ear,
Twill be glorious, we do declare!
And God's own son will be the leading One,
At the meeting in the air!"

Everyone who knew these two are certain that, when our times each come,
Robert and Nollie will indeed see to it that each of us do indeed join them
at such a meeting, that there will indeed be the glorious music,
and that, indeed, Jesus Christ, Himself, will lead our singing!
The words were written on their headstone as a probable sort of
PROMISE
by them to the rest of us!

This view is an overview of a section of the cemetery
from a northwesterly side of the headstone.
In the distance is a peaceful country pond.

This photo was taken in 1983
of the abovementioned area.
Pictured is Nollie and grandniece, Beverly,
at Robert's military marker.
In the 1999 photos,
note the cemetery's 16-year growth.
