son of William &Mariah(Green) Broughton, grandson of William &Elizabeth(Nicholson), and g-grandson of Job &Mary "Polly"(Lewis) Broughton Thomas's biological mother is an unknown Hammons who was born between 1830 and 1853 in Knox Co, KY, one of the eight daughters of John Thomas &Apsley(Mills) Hammons, but which one I do not know--yet. Perry Broughton was first married to Susannah Hammons, on 15 Nov 1860, daughter of Edwin &Mary "Polly"(Cole) Hammons, granddaughter of Obediah &Elizabeth(Skaggs) Hammons Perry married his second wife, Catherine Taylor, on 01 Sep 1887, daughter of John F. &Esther Jane(Gambrel) Taylor, granddaughter of Nelson &Belle(Rice) Taylor, g-granddaughter of Cornelius &Sarah(Walker) Taylor But apparently, in about 1867, Perry must have had an affair with one of John's & Apsley's daughters. This resulted in her getting pregnant and having my grandfather who was, of course, illegitimate. Apparently, John's & Apsley's son, Thomas Gordon Hammons (b: Abt 1834), and his wife Roda (Jackson) Hammons, probably decided that it was in the baby's/child's best interest that they raise him as a Hammons (along with their other children) to avoid the stigma of being illegitimate or a bastard. Thomas was the child's blood uncle, Roda proved to be loving mother, this way Thomas also protected his distraught sister from any other harm - - - and Perry Broughton faded into the background. Patsy Ann Koerner (now deceased) wrote in a 1977 letter that "I have found through reliable sources that the father of my great-grandfather, Thomas Gordon Hammons, was Perry Broughton. The Broughtons look just like great-grandpa . . . I think the Broughton people are fine people. I am still working on great grandpa's true mother . . . she may or may not have been a Hammons." One distant cousin said, "I would guess the fact Perry Broughton was his [Thomas's] father wasn't common knowledge outside of the family but my grandmother's family sure knew, and he was said to be very 'near and dear' to my great-grandmother who had his photo. She called him "Uncle." I guess we are fortunate in the respect that Thomas Gordon Hammons is in the middle of such well known families. |
