was born January 3, 1832, and is the youngest of ten children born to John and Susan (White) Cobb, natives of Rockingham County, N. C.. John Cobb came to Jessamine County with his father, Vintner Cobb, who died here. John was born in 1773; was a farmer, and died with Asiatic Cholera in 1833. Ambrose Cobb, a native of Jessamine County, was reared on the home farm, receiving a common school education. At the age of twenty he became a partner with his brother, John, in the mercantile business near Big Hickman, and continued but one year. He married, April 3, 1852, Malinda Hunter, daughter of Henry Hunter, a native of Jessamine County, whose father, Henry Hunter, immigrated from Pennsylvania. They had six children: Mary F., William H., Ann M., Margaret E., Richard H. and Ambrose M. Mr. Cobb owns 145 acres of land. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Pleasant Hill. He is also a member of the Masonic Fraternity. He was elected Magistrate in 1866 and served two terms. He was postmaster at Sulphur Well while selling goods, which was his occupation in Garrard County in 1878. In 1881 he began to sell goods in Jessamine County and continued until 1883. Since then he has been a general stock trader. William H. Cobb was born August 22, 1854; married May 8, 1878, Maggie Burdine, daughter of John Burdine of Jessamine County. |
OBITUARY 1912 |
one of Jessamine's most honored citizens, died at the home of his son, Mr. Andrew Cobb in Nickolasville Friday morning, at the advanced age of 81 years. There were few men as active as Mr. Cobb, for his age and was a gentlman of the old school. There was a striking resemblance between the deceased and Abraham Lincoln, who was a cousin. The mother of the deceased, whose maiden name was Susan White, was born in Rockingham County, N.C., and was a first cousin of Mrs. Nancy Hanks, mother of Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Cobb was a native of Jessamine County where he had always resided and was a most worthy man. He is survived by his wife and the following children; Mrs. Maggie Burdine, Andrew, and W.H. Cobb of Jessamine county, and Mrs. Anne Witte of Lancaster. The funeral services were conducted from the home of the son, Mr. Andrew Cobb, Saturday afternoon last, Rev. L. R. Godbey officiating. Interment at Maple Grove cemetery. |

"Jessamine Journal" -County Newspaper- Friday, December 8, 1911 | Mrs. Mary F. Peel Meets An Untimely Death A horrible death came to Mrs. Mary Frances Peel at her home near Mt. Lebanon Thursday last. Wednesday while rendering lard in an outhouse her dress caught fire and before assistance came she was fatally burned. Mrs. Peel was a daughter of Mr. Ambrose Cobb and a most excellent woman. She was born in 1866 and is survived by her husband and three children: Mrs. Mary Hunter of Kokomo, Ind., Mrs. Annie L. Broadus, of Madison County and Hamlet Peel of Jessamine County. She was the sister of W.H. and Andrew Cobb and Mrs. John Burdine, all of Jessamine County. The funeral services were conducted from the late residence Saturday morning, Rev. L. R. Godbey, officiating. |
Fatally Burned At Mt. Lebanon Mrs. Mary Frances Peel died early Thursday at her home near Mt. Lebanon as the result of burns sustained on Wednesday. She was engaged in rendering lard in an outhouse when in some way her dress ignited, and before help could reach her she was burned from her ankles to her hips. Her hands and arms were also badly burned. George Hardwick, the Mt. Lebanon merchant, ran to her assistance and endeavored to smother the flames. She was about 55 years old and is survived by her husband Thomas Peel, and three children: Hamlet Peel, of this county, Mrs. Mary Hunter of Kokomo, Ind., and Mrs. Annie Lee Broadus of Madison County. She was a sister of Andrew & W.H. Cobb, Mrs. John Burdine of Mt. Lebanon, and Mrs. James Witt of Lancaster. Funeral will be held tomorrow (Saturday) morning at the residence at 10 o'clock. |
