![]() After Confederate forces, under Brigadier General Felix Kirk Zollicoffer, came through Cumberland Gap into Kentucky on September 9, 1861, one detachment entered Barbourville on September 19. Commanded by Captain Isaac J. Black, the local Home Guard met the invaders in what is referred to as the Battle of Barbourville, the first battle/skirmish of the Civil War in Kentucky. Father and Three Sons Master Masons in Same Lodge We present to you a whole family that belong to the same lodge. It is none other than John A. Black and his three sons who are all Past Masters of Mountain Lodge No. 187, Barbourville. Reading from left to right they are: John A. Black, who was made a Mason in February, 1866; William Carson Black, Past Master, Past Grand High Priest and the present Grand Master of Kentucky; Read P. Black, Past Master and the present Sheriff of Knox County, and who has just returned from France, where he was with the Y.M.C.A. during the war with Germany; Henry C. Black, Past Master and who is now residing in Johnson City, Tenn., and is President of the Johnson City National Bank. The Lord has blessed Bro. John A. Black with this world's goods and three splendid sons, who have made their mark in the world, and we hope that he may be spared for many years yet to come to enjoy all the many blessings that God has given him. |
