![]() Wednesday, November 8th, 2000 ~Siler beats back pair of challengers~ By Fred Petke Staff Writer |
elected State Rep. Charlie Siler to a seventh term in Frankfort by another large margin. Siler's 7,665 total votes handily defeated Democratic challenger and former judge-executive Leroy Gilbert by 2,634 votes and independent candidate William Fulton by a whopping 7,253 votes. "I feel good," Siler said Tuesday night at his home. "I feel like the people have given me a mandate to continue. I think tonight's victory is an endorsement of how I do business." Siler's victory gives him a fourth consecutive term after serving three terms in the late 1980s before being defeated at the start of the decade. The race for state representative was a three-way event for the first time in recent memory. All three were confident of their chances of beating the other two heading into Tuesday. Fulton, who has campaigned several times in the past, said he was a little surprised at the vast gap between him and the other two. "I didn't think it'd be that far apart, but I guess I should've expected it coming in as an independent," Fulton said. "It's just not my time to win right now. It's hard to come from the outside in Whitley County and take a seat a man's held for 12 years and has been trusted to hold." In 1998, Gilbert lost his bid for a second term as judge-executive by 1,200 votes to Mike Patrick. Earlier in this campaign, Gilbert has said if he didn't win, he likely wouldn't run for political office again. Gilbert could not be reached Tuesday night. |
