The boys of Berkley Hart (Jeff Berkley & Calman Hart) didn't disappoint the sold-out house full of fans on the 2001 Summer Solstice. Starting off with a folked up version of Bob Marley's "Stir It Up," those in attendance immediately fell into singalong mode and joined in. It was only the beginning to a very special, wonderfully intimate and fun evening of music.
In their first set, Berkley Hart rolled through songs from their popular "Wreck 'n' Sow" album ("Wake Up Charlie," "Achin' Feelin'," "Texas Line") as well as some covers (Dylan's "Just Like a Woman") and some impressive new material ("All Roads Lead to You," "Never Leave Again"). The duo also had some friends in the audience who they invited up to perform which was quite a special treat for everyone. Ric Kaestner performed "Such is Love." Later, Tim Flannery and Dani Carroll came up and they all sang a new Flannery tune called "Waiting on a Friend."
After a short break, the solstice show went on. The front door and windows were open wide to welcome summer and it flowed into the rooms with heat and harmony, a perfect combination to match the music within. Berkley Hart performed more from "Wreck 'n' Sow" (a record that many people have worn out!) including "Sink or Swim" and "Barrel of Rain." To round out this set was a sparkling version of "High School Town" with Dani Carroll joining in on background vocals. The duo also debuted a brand new song called "Woody Guthrie Knew" which could easily be the theme song of the house concert since it embodies the spirit of why these shows happen.
For an encore finale, everyone in the house became the Emergency Choir on "911 Jesus," and the wonderful house concert & solstice spirit soared as they closed with "This Land is Your Land."
The evening was still another testament to the power that
exists when music is played by people who love it for other people who love
it. Keep the love alive and we'll see you here next time.
