Sweet November nights. The weather was unseasonably warm and folks came ready to see travelling man, Chuck Pyle, and a couple friends, Berkley Hart.
Berkley Hart came on first to warm up the crowd and pleased everyone with some of their great tunes like "My, My, My," and "All Roads Lead to You." Dani Carroll joined them on a Chuck Pyle tune actually called "Slow Time Kid" that Berkley has been performing for years. They ended their set with an exquisite version of "Barrel of Rain." Pyle took the floor immediately following their set.
Chuck's music was unfamiliar to most in the crowd but by the end of the first set, almost everyone was up and ready to buy at least one of his six CD's. Songs in the first set included "Colorado," "Other Side of the Hill," and "Drifter's Wind." Pyle's remarkable presence (he's a tall man with a relaxed style all beneath a big Stetson) kept the crowd intrigued, enthralled and completely entertained.
By the beginning of the second set, the audience had thinned a bit, but Pyle's performance didn't. He continued in his mellow yet captivating style, mixing humor and tragedy into his set. Songs like "Sedona Ramona" were followed by others such as "Here Comes the Water" (the song's story was also the inspiration for Berkley Hart's "Sink or Swim."). To end the show, Pyle led the crowd in a gorgeous call & response to his song "Keepin' Time by the River." And to add even more to an already memorable performance, Pyle recited different bumper sticker sayings which he says is his way of keeping up with how people are thinking these days.
After the show, many folks hung around to talk with Chuck and buy more of his records. And in case they hadn't gotten enough, both acts appeared at Java Joe's the following night.
It was another fabulous evening with Berkley Hart &
Chuck Pyle who each added another wonderful performance to the history of
the Meeting Grace series. See you here again soon.
