back to A Wing & A Prayer

How We Survive-Kitchens, Wanderings, Corvus Corax

If you move again

I hope it will be west of you

still east of me

to diminish the distance

we can only accept

as inconvenience or

the magic ingredient

to our endurance

Our letters crossing each other

midway across the country

stir our curiosity for each other

thicken the fascination of our love

Maybe they even touch somewhere

in southern Nevada

or Las Cruces, New Mexico

where you lost your sunglasses

nearly ten years after

I bought these gold earrings

at a roadside gas station in Utah

But we didn't really know each other back then

only that we have always been

victims of the road

takers of its temptations

believers in its lost religion

it can save us

accepts our offerings of sunglasses & poetry

skin & music

If you move again

our letters will still find their way

If they were birds

they would be ravens

Like the familiars of Odin

we let fly Thought & Memory

as messengers to deliver our good news

to bring on the daylight

They travel long distances in single days

and their language is advanced, varied

keeps them alert and safe

Their voices are distinct

and the sound is from a deeper place

a place that does not deny

a realm of doom

but is also capable of creation
