Now, most of the lions are manufactured in Hong Kong, China and Malaysia. The lions produced in Hong Kong and Malaysia are more expensive, due to higher labour cost. Since lions produced by China are cheaper it became a major exporter. Here are pictures illustrating the differences between "Fut Shan" and "Hok Shan" Lions.
The traditional lion heads can be divided into 3 categories: Lau's, Kwan's and Cheung's. Lau, Kwan and Cheung were famous generals in China from the Romance of Three Kingdom.
The 3 colours of the lions are yellow, red & black, and black. The yellow lion with white fur represents General Lau because Lau had a yellow face and white beard. There are 3 coins behind lion's head which means intelligence, kindness and bravery. The red and black lion represents General Kwan because Kwan had a red face and black beard. There are 2 coins behind lion's head which mean intelligence and bravery. The black lion represents General Cheung who had a black face and black beard. There is 1 coin behind lion's head which means braver
Now the lions have a lot more different colors, to seak higher score in competitions and attract more spectators. Gold and silver colour lions become very popular these days.
