Gene watched her steadily as she sat. Who was this person clad in an orange hooded cloak? If she wasn’t working for The Dark Stars, who was she working for?

Melfina brought a cup of tea and placed it in front of the figure. For some reason she wasn’t frightened.

                “Thank you, Melfina.”

Melfina suddenly looked at her, “How did you know my name?”

“I know a lot of things.” Under her hood she smiled.

Proteus was getting impatient, “Well, tell your story. I want to know what is going to happen to Kat, to Jim, to all of us. What are we mixed up in?!”

“Proteus, I know you’re worried but please calm down. Like I said before, I can only give information I was sent to give.” The Knight of Energy sipped her tea before turning her attention back to her audience. “Does anyone have any questions before I begin?”

“Yes. Who do you work for?” Aisha asked. She was smelling a high level of Tao magic from her just like The Dark Stars.

Her master, represented by a Dragon. All species of the universe thought of her master as a Dragon, how odd, but that’s how it was. “My master is God. The one who created the universe, the one who created us knights, and the one you call The Dragon.” She watched as their mouths hung open, she wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t believe her. She, the Knight of Energy had a job to do.

“Then the story of The Dragon’s Knights is true?” Suzuka asked. She had heard stories of the eight knights as bedtime stories when she was a child.

“It depends on what you heard.” The Knight of Energy answered. Maybe she wouldn’t have to tell the whole long story.

“There were eight knights created by the blood of The Dragon. War represented by red, Mystery represented by black, Heart represented by pink, Spirituality represented by purple, Intelligence represented by blue, Energy represented by orange, Life represented by green, and Balance represented by grey-silver.” Suzuka said.

“Yes. And these knights kept the balance in the universe, they were like pillars. Soon there was a conflict, five of these knight wanted to lead the destruction of the universe, two opposed, and one remained neutral.” The Knight of Energy explained.

                “So what happened?” Gene asked.

“The Dragon ordered the three remaining loyal knights, Heart, Energy, and Life, to leave the other five knights alone. The Knights of Life and Heart cared too much to stand by and let the universe be destroyed so they declared war on the five knights known as The Dark Stars. The Knight of Energy still remained by The Dragon’s side. A great darkness that was hidden in the universe was used by The Dark Stars to increase their power. Planets begun to be destroyed one by one; the Knights of Heart and Life were losing this war until they found a brilliant light. Combined with their own light, the Knights of Life and Heart overcame the darkness locking The Dark Stars away never to be seen again.”

“Why didn’t The Dragon help them?” Aisha asked. Didn’t God care for his own creation-the universe?

“I’m unable to answer that. Up to this day I still don’t know, but I assume my master wanted to see if the universe would save itself. If the darkness was greater than the light then the universe deserved to be destroyed.”

“I see. Then what about this Uriel The Dark Stars want?” Proteus asked. Kat had told him a story similar to that, but never used specified names. Now he almost understood why she hadn’t.

Uriel doesn’t exist.” The Knight of Energy said.

How was that possible? “What do you mean by that?” Gene said. Didn’t that thing in Jim say that it was ‘his’ Uriel.

Uriel only exists for The Dark Stars, but for everyone else Uriel is just a name.”

“How is that possible? Then what are we trying to protect?!” Gene screamed suddenly standing. His hand was shaking involuntary.

“You are trying to protect the one you believe is Uriel; the one The Dark Stars want.” her voice was calm. Rock had died because he figured it out and tried to protect the one The Dark Stars named Uriel.

He didn’t understand. “Am I a guardian?” he asked quietly.

“You are The Guardian. This is your destiny Gene Starwind.” She wished she could just come out with it, but she wasn’t order to. They would have to figure it out for themselves. Everything would eventual fall into place. Only if Gene could remember what he was told. His destiny was always intertwined with the one he was to protect. He would have to use his heart to save the universe as he had done before.

Gene suddenly fell back in his chair feeling defeated. He stared at the table. Nothing made sense anymore. Why wouldn’t anyone give him the answers he was seeking? “Then tell me what I am The Guardian of.”

She knew it was hard but if they wanted the universe to be saved they would have to do it on their own. That’s what she was told. “I was not sent to tell you that.”

Where was she? Where were her Mommy and Daddy? Why was it so dark in here? A small figure, while holding something, ran out a dark room of the Outlaw Star.

“You’re really no help to us.” Jim said. She just confused them more. All he knew now was if darkness overcame the light the universe would be destroyed.

“I’m sorry if I am not.” The Knight of Energy said.

“I have one more question to ask.  Is Uriel the light that must combat the darkness?” Suzuka asked.

Uriel is Uriel- a name which means Flame or Light of God.”

Suzuka knew she would tell her that. Now she knew Uriel was the light, but then why would The Dark Stars use the light to fight if they wanted to destroy the universe. Suzuka only nodded. This was one mystery worth solving, and she was going to stay until it was solved.

A small voice interrupted them, “Mommy, Daddy, are you in here?”

The Knight of Energy turned to face the small voice. She saw a little girl holding an animal, which looked like a small kitten with wings. The girl looked no older than four and fright was evident in her eyes. “It’s okay. Don’t be scared.” she soothed.

The young girl started to silently cry backing away from the group who were staring at her.

“Don’t you remember me? I remember you and Twinkle.” The Knight of Energy removed her hood revealing lovely brown hair and hazel green eyes, and approached the little girl.

The young girl’s eyes lit up with realization. “Auntie Kira!” She jumped into The Knight of Energy’s arms.

Kira, The Knight of Energy, smiled. She was so happy. A tear escape from her eyes.

Proteus stared at the two. The little girl had very long hair; it was practically on the floor when she stood, but that wasn’t it. It was black and had gold streaks. The girl had ice blue eyes. Was that little girl Kat?

Kira sat back in her seat with the little girl in her lap.

“Auntie Kira, where’s Mommy and Daddy?”

What should she tell her? She was so sensitive. “Well, Mommy and Daddy said you could go on a real adventure, and I got these people to take you.”

The girl’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Really! Now Mommy can’t cut my hair! But…um…you’re staying with me, right?”

She wished she could. Kira didn’t want to leave now that she was here. “You know I can’t.”

                The girl started to cry.

Gene watched her-the little girl. He knew who she was, he had met her before. “Why are you crying?” he asked softly.

Remembering there were other people in the room, the little girl removed herself from Kira’s lap and tried to hide behind the chair Kira was sitting in.

                “She’s extremely shy.” Kira explained.

                “Is she Kat?” Proteus asked.

“No, that’s not my name!” a small voice said. The little girl peeked from behind the chair to look at Proteus.

“Oh.” Proteus got up to leave the room. He had to go check on Kat.

The little girl noticed his crest fallen face, “Did I say something wrong Auntie Kira?”

“No, Little One. His friend was hurt and she’s very sick, but she left. She isn’t here anymore.”

Everyone looked at her. What did she mean, Kat wasn’t here anymore? Where could she have gone in her condition? “Where is Kat?!” Proteus shouted stomping to Kira.

“She’s somewhere safe, don’t worry.” Kira answered. Yes, she was somewhere safe. They didn’t have to worry about her. Kira began to smile, only if they knew, only if they knew. Kira got up and lifted the little girl. “I have to go now.”

The little girl began to shake her head.

“How about this: If one of them can guess your name, you will stay, but if they can’t you don’t have to stay. We have a deal?” Kira smiled.

The little girl thought about. They would never guess her name, “Okay.”

Gene stared at her. Her name was on the tip of his tongue. He knew her and that pet of hers. “I know your name.” he said suddenly. Gene got up and walked to Kira and stood a centimeter in front of her, and looked at the little girl.

The little girl turned away from Gene in fright. People she didn’t know scared her. Why did he have to come so close? She’ll get Twinkle to fix the problem. The winged small kitten bit Gene on his nose.

Oww!!” Gene inwardly smiled. He somehow knew that was going to happen. That thing had bitten him before, on the same spot too.

Kira giggled. “Well Gene, what’s her name?” She smiled at him. Soon everything would fall into place, and the battle for the universe would begin. Kira inwardly cringed at the last part. Why did there have to be a battle?

“I never forget a pretty face, Katrina.” Gene smiled. He remembered a little. When he was younger she hid because she didn’t want to cut her hair, and he found her and tricked her into getting a hair cut, which she cried about for the longest time.

Her eyes widened. How did he know her name? Katrina tightened her grip on Kira’s cloak. She didn’t want her Auntie to go. A small sob escaped her mouth.

There was something in her memory circuits. The little girl, Katrina, she knew. Melfina didn’t understand why she would know the little girl but she did. She could describe it. Melfina walked toward Gene and stood next to him. “Katrina, don’t cry. It’s okay. You like adventures and this is your chance to have one.”

Katrina knew that voice but it wasn’t the same. Katrina looked at Melfina searchingly. “Do you have a twin?” she asked.

“Not that I know of.” Melfina smiled.

“Sure? ‘Cause you look just like her and she’s a librarian, and she’s just turned human, and she makes the best chocolate chip cookies!” Katrina said staring at Melfina straight in her eyes.

Kira put Katrina down. She kissed her forehead, “We had a deal, now behave. Gene will take care of you, and will take you wherever you want to go. No crying.”

“But…” Katrina said staring at her shoes forgetting all about Melfina for the moment.

                “Katrina.”

“Okay, but you didn’t kiss Twinkle.”

The winged kitten suddenly jumped onto Katrina’s head looking up expectantly at Kira.

Kira smiled and kissed the kitten on his forehead. “Goodbye you two. I’ll be always watching you.” she smiled disappearing.

Gene signaled Aisha, Suzuka, Jim, and Proteus to come toward him. “Katrina, that’s Proteus, the weird looking human is Aisha.”

                “She’s a Ctarl-Ctral.” Katrina corrected. She wasn’t stupid.

“Thank you! I like you already!” Aisha smiled at her.

                Katrina smiled. “Who’s the assassin?”

She was smart. She observed things rather well. Suzuka wondered what else this little girl knew. “I’m Suzuka.” It was strange, why did Kat disappear and this girl, who could pass for her daughter, suddenly appeared?

“Katrina, I want you to meet someone who’s my right hand man. He’s like my little bro. This is Jim.”

Jim smiled at Katrina, “Nice meeting you. We’re going to have lots of fun.” He held out his hand. He suddenly felt something he couldn’t control.

Katrina smiled. “Hi!!” She lifted her hand to shake Jim’s when Twinkle, the winged kitten, started hissing. “Twinkle, what’s wrong?” Katrina asked worriedly.

                “I’m what’s wrong.” Jim’s hands gripped Katrina’s small shoulders.

Energy sparks flew around the two. Katrina screamed in pain, as the dark voice laughed.

End

After Thought: This is the first part of an interlude sequence. This chapter does clear up some things about The Dark Stars, well I hoped it did. The question is, what happened to Kat? And where did this little girl come from? More will be revealed, all you have to do is keep reading. ~~Lynderia
