William was recorded in various records as a mariner in 1827-1836, a fisherman in 1851 and 1861, and retired mariner again in 1871. However, the 1841 census records him as a coal carrier. He lived in Brixham all his life, in Hannafords Buildings (1841), Horsepool Hill (1851), Bunkers Hill (1861), Gas Lane (1871) and Higher Street (1881). By 1871, he was blind.
