Arghiro

Edmund Albert PHILLIPS is recorded as one of the skippers of  Arghiro, a cutter of 28 gross tons built by S. J. Dewdney of Brixham, launched in 1901 and registered first as DH2 and then as BM221. She had various owners until being bought in 1923 by Lord Churston for a yacht.

Boy Fred

A “J. Phillips”¾who could have been Joseph James Leighton PHILLIPS or Arthur John (Jack) PHILLIPS¾is recorded as one of the skippers of Boy Fred (BM272). She was a ketch of 32 gross tons built by J. W. & A. Upham of Brixham and launched in 1907. By 1934, she had been converted into a yacht.

Camellia

Richard Thomas PHILLIPS is recorded as skipper of the Camellia (BM35) from 1889-1893, and he bought her in 1902. Edmund Albert PHILLIPS bought her on 13 Feb 1917 but sold her to Richard’s daughter Nellie Elizabeth Lock BICKFORD on 12 Jun 1917.  She was sold abroad in 1920.
Camellia was built as a cutter of 25 gross tons by Robert Jackman of Brixham and launched in 1895. At some point, she was converted from a cutter to a ketch and her tonnage increased to 48¾probably by cutting her in half and inserting a new middle section.

Geina

Edmund Albert PHILLIPS is recorded as one of the skippers of  Geina (BM179), a ketch of 25 gross tons built by Robert Jackman of Brixham and launched in 1892. She was owned by the Perrett family until 1914 and was broken up in 1918.

Guess

Guess was the first of two sailing trawlers owned by Sam HOLLAND, wife of Martha Frances PHILLIPS. A ketch of 24 gross tons, Guess was built by J. W. & A. Upham of Brixham and launched in 1889 with Sam as the first recorded owner. She was registered first as DH288 and then as BM80. Arthur John (Jack) PHILLIPS sailed in her in 1892. Sam sold Guess on 27 Mar 1920, and she was broken up in 1925. Guess was skippered at various times both by Sam and his eldest son William HOLLAND.

Guess Again

Sam HOLLAND’s second boat was Guess Again (BM346), a ketch of 25 gross tons built by J. W. & A. Upham of Brixham and launched in 1916. Sam was her owner from 17 Nov 1916 until he sold her to his brother-in-law Arthur John (Jack) PHILLIPS on 10 Jan 1922. By 1934 Guess Again was no longer fishing, and she was finally broken up in 1955. The recorded skippers of Guess Again include Sam’s second son Richard HOLLAND, (Joseph) James PHILLIPS, and Arthur John (Jack) PHILLIPS.

Kathleen Winnie

Kathleen Winnie (BM345) was a ketch of 35 gross tons built by Robert Jackman & Sons of Brixham and launched in 1916. She was owned by Arthur John (Jack) PHILLIPS from 24 Sep 1916 until he sold her to Sam HOLLAND’s nephew Thomas Bartlett HOLLAND on 27 Feb 1925. She was sold to Norway in 1939. Among the skippers of Kathleen Winnie were Arthur John (Jack) PHILLIPS, (Joseph) James PHILLIPS and the said Thomas Bartlett HOLLAND.

Speranza

Speranza was built by W. A. Gibbs, Galmpton, in 1887. She was a cutter of gross weight 24 tons, registered first as DH233 and then as BM64.  The first recorded owners were R. Radford and Arthur John (Jack) Phillips. Since Jack’s address is given as 3 Higher Furzeham, whereas he was known to be living with his parents at Furzes Alley in 1891, we may assume that he was not the boat’s initial owner.
In the 1891 census, Speranza was recorded as moored in Brixham harbour. On 27 Jan 1900, she was sunk at her moorings by BM133 (Delight) while the latter was trying to pick up her mooring. Arthur John (Jack) Phillips was her skipper from 1903 to 1912.
Jack’s wife Annie became Speranza’s owner on 22 Mar 1917, but she sold her again on 19 Jul 1918. The boat was finally broken up in 1923.
