In the beginning after the retreat of the ice age, of course, when settlement was possible the shores surrounding Scotland became inhabitted by a nomadic tribe of hunter gatherers (around the 10th millenium B.C.) of which little is known, they lived in basic shelters in woods and forests and in coastal areas in caves and on beaches, the only evidence of their existence are the remains of their middens which contained small animal bones, shelfish (in certain middens up to a million shells were found), and the discovery of disgarded tools and implements made from stone, their is also evidence that they used mattocks (large pick with one end flattened for losening soil) to cut blubber from beached whales leaving only the giant frames (although personaly I can think of loads of great uses for whale bone) to be picked clean by scavenging animals and birds. These people were thought to travel by water using dug-out wooden coracle type boats with animal skins as coverings. Fortunately their is more evidence of pre-historic Scotland provided by sand, mud, wind and lots of luck and it is these I will be covering on the next few pages.
