The Triangle area of North Carolina has over 100 miles of trails nearby. Each of the local cities has greenways, or undeveloped corridors of land that frequently come complete with trails. In addition to the excellent state parks that are local to the triangle, another great training area is Duke Forest.

The Duke Forest comprises 7900 acres of land, lying primarily in two counties adjacent to the Duke University campus. Many type of forest research are done within Duke Forest. Its five major divisions and several smaller tracts are fully accessible through a network of roads and fire trails. The division off of Highway 751 (Durham Division) is particularly good for running. You can put together runs of numerous lengths, even as much as 15+ miles with virtually no overlap.

The forest has been managed for research and educational purposes since the early 1930s. Limited public use of the Duke Forest is permitted so long as such use does not conflict with teaching and research projects. Permissible activities include hiking, horseback riding, and biking on the established roads, fishing, and picnicking. The main purpose of Duke Forest is research, so be sure to follow the set rules for recreation usage.
