The lush greenery and sparkling streams of White Clay Creek State Park
offer a refreshing change of pace from the encroaching urban development of
New Castle County. White Clay Creek State Park was created in 1968 when the
state purchased 24 acres of land. The park has since grown to almost 2,500
scenic acres in the continuing effort to preserve and protect the natural
resources of the valley.
Twenty miles of trails lead runners to scenic vistas overlooking lush
Runners can also stroll though history at White Clay Creek. The Logger's Trail chronicles the history of lumbering in the area while the Twin Valley Trail leads hikers to the Arc Corner Monument, which marks one end of the curved boundary between Pennsylvania and Delaware. Traveling through rolling farm land and mature stands of beech and oak, Possum Hill hikers will discover the monument marking the point used by the famous survey team to establish the beginning of the Mason-Dixon Line. Crossing the border into Pennsylvania is the White Clay Creek Preserve is open daily from 8 a.m. until sunset. White Clay Creek Preserve comprised or 1,253 acres, is situated in southern Chester County, 3 miles north of Newark, Delaware. A hiking trail, over 3 miles in length, runs the entire length of the northern portion of the Preserve and ties in with trails in the White Clay Creek Preserve in Delaware. An 8 mile trail has been designated for equestrian use and is now in use. In both states, the trails trace along gentle hills and streams through the Mid-Atlantic flood plain near the state's northern border.
