Feena twisted the rope of her bag around in knots. The person guiding her to her room seemed nice, but kept giving Feena weird looks. Probably because Feena looked like she was about to jump out of her skin at every turn. Dawn Sisters Weyr was much bigger than Adanuk Weyr, where Feena had been born and raised. Feena just knew she was going to get lost.
"Here you go Feena. Your room." The kitchen-maid left Feena alone starring into the empty room.
It was a nice room. There was a big bed along the one wall, completely decked out in nice sheets and comforters. Opposite that was a trunk and desk. She walked in and opened the trunk. The only thing in it was a white robe. Feena was puzzled for a moment, then it hit her. It's for the hatching. She threw her bag in the trunk on top of the robe and went to the desk. She sat in the chair and opened the drawer. To her delight, inside there was a quill, paper and ink. She smiled and pulled it out of the drawer and put it on the desk. Kaye, realizing that Feena wasn't going to do anything amazingly interesting, sat on the bed and chased imaginary flies.
Feena was about to begin her letter when she heard a knock on her door. She rose quickly and answered it. It was a bronze flit. Feena was surprised to see it, and even more surprised to see it fly in and drop an envelope on her desk. It chatted a bit with Kaye and then flew back out the door. Feena shook her head and shut the door.
"Life here is going to take some getting used to, Kaye." The firelizard chirped an agreement.
Feena sat back down at her desk and opened the envelope. It was a note.

If you would take the time to fill in the following form we would be much abliged. It is simply for people to get to know some of the candidates better. The bronze flit will be back in four or five candlemarks to pick it up.
Thank you!Feena put the note down and looked at the other sheet. She picked up her quill and filled it in. When she was done, it looked something like this:

She smiled and left the package for the little bronze flit to pick up. "C'mon Kaye. Let's explore."

Feena was so tired from exploring the Weyr that when the dinner bell rang she was almost too tired to eat. She flopped down on a bench at a table. Only one other person was there.
"Hello." Feena smiled at him.
The boy raised his head. "Hi."
"I'm Feena." She tried again to start a conversation.
He looked up at her and smiled. "I'm Jabian. You're a candidate?"
Feena nodded.
"Where are you from?"
"Adanuk Weyr."
"How were you searched?"
Although she was a little shy talking to a complete stranger, Feena told him the story of her searching.
Jabian smiled and told her about life at Blue Star.
During a lull in the conversation, Kaye made her presence, and hunger, known. Feena shushed Kaye and gave her the scraps off her plate.
Jabian smiled. "What's her name?"
"Kaye." Feena replied.
"How'd you get her?"
Feena smiled and told Jabian that story.
By the time she was done her story, dinner was over.
Feena got up and yawned. "Nice meeting you. I guess I'll see you around."
Jabian got up as well. "I'm sure you will. Dawn Sisters' not as big as you think it is.
Feena smiled climbing the stairs to her room, Kaye in tow. The firelizard was flying slowly and shakely, obviously trying to tell Feena that she was tired. Feena laughed and plucked the firelizard out of the air. She carried Kaye to her room and set her on the bed. "You go to sleep Kaye. I've got something to do." Within seconds the firelizard was snoring.
Feena walked over to her desk and pulled out a piece of paper.
Dear Mom,
I hope you are well. I've only been here for a day, but I like it. I have to admit I'm a little homesick, but not enough to come home. I met someone nice today. His name's Jabian. No mom, I don't think he's nice like that. I hope everyone back home are well.....Feena is a candidate at Blue Star Weyr.
