6.3  Compound Inequalities

Mrs. Agriesti's Algebra

Goal: To learn to solve and graph compound inequalities.

A Compound Inequality is two inequalities connected by an "and" or an "or".

     Ex:  -9 < 6x + 3
and 6x + 3 < 39     (This can be also written as -9 < 6x + 3 < 39)

     Ex:  8 + 2x < 6
or 3x - 2 > 13

Examples:  Solve and graph each inequality.

Ex 1:

Your goal is to get the x by itself.
Use the same steps you would use for a regular inequality but this time you have
3 sides (left, middle, and right).  What you do to one side, do it to ALL sides.

There is are equals so use closed circles when graphing.

Ex 2:

This time solve each equation separately.
Use the same steps you would use for a regular.

There are no equals so use open circles when graphing.
