4.3  Quick Graphs Using Intercepts

Mrs. Agriesti's Algebra

Goal:  To find the intercepts of linear equation and use them to graph the equation.

Intercept -  The point where a line crosses an axis.

To Find the Intercepts:

x-intercept (x,0) - let y = 0 (substitute 0 for y), and solve for x.

y
-intercept (0,y) - let x = 0 (substitute 0 for x), and solve for y.

Sketch the graphs of each of the equations A and B (above):

A.  2x + 3y =12                                                  B.  -4x +2y = 10

Plot the intercepts found above.

Use a straightedge to draw a line through the points.

Add arrows and label the line.
