Now Magüi plays Zurich, but she has already lost in the singles to Amanda Coetzer 6-4 6-1. The season is almost over for Magüi - a season full of GS successes and of early loses in smaller tournaments.

19th of September, 2000: Magüi lost 1 and 2 to Nathalie Dechy of France in the first round of the Olympics - Magüi declared later on that she couldn't speak about her game, cause she had not played it in the whole match (and with that result we can believe it..) Oh well, the dream was getting here! ¡Vamos Magüi! I am sure you tried your best!

15th of September, 2000: Magüi will face Nathalie Dechy of France in the first round. Their only previous meeting was won by Magüi: 2R US Open (Aug-25-97): M Serna - N Dechy-Q 6-4 6-4, but that was a long time ago! Let's hope Magüi can win!

Arantxa and Conchita has been rather lucky with the doubles draw, as both the French (n.1 seeds) and the US teams are on the other side of the draw.

¡¡Vamos España!!

13th of September, 2000: The Olympic Games are here!! Magüi is so far out of the seeds (she's n.17) but if Amelie Mauresmo or Nathalie Dechy finally decide to retire, Magüi will land one of the seeds. The draw will be out this Friday - let's hope Magüi doesn't draw one of the top seeds too early! There's only two more days to go!

Magüi made it yesterday to the CBS highlight! Read this article (from Yahoo!):

--------------

WET WINNER (yahoo!)

"Magui Serna found a way to get on the CBS highlight show.

The Spanish player made a bet with her coach, Stefan Ortega, that if she upset Amanda Coetzer in their third-round meeting Friday, she would run through the fountain at the Unisphere, a symbol of the 1964 World's Fair that is located near Arthur Ashe Stadium.

She won 7-5, 7-6 (3), then got wet, making the highlight show for the first time".

2nd of September, 2000: Magüi and Meghann lost to McNeil and Coetzer, 13th seeds today, 6-4 6-4. Magüi will play tomorrow for a place in the QF vs. Venus Williams! Good luck Magüi!!

1st of September, 2000: Magüi, Queen of tie-breaks, reigns supreme! Today Magüi defeated 13th seed Amanda Coetzer (RSA) 7-5 7-6(3), keeping her unbelievable record of late in the tie-breaks! And reaches the 4th round of the US Open for the second time in her career (the previous time was in 1997). Well done Magüi! Next up will be the winner of the match between Meghann and Venus.

31st of August, 2000: Magüi and Meghann won their match 6-0 6-2, and move on to the second round in doubles! They will play Coetzer and McNeil (who is, as far as I am concerned, a TOTAL LEGEND!!) for a place in the third round. Go Magüi/Meghann!! Also, tomorrow, Magüi plays her third round match in the singles vs. Amanda Coetzer, a player that has defeated her in their previous five matches.

In other results, Conchita def. Maria Antonia and moves on to the third round (in her 45 appearance at a Grand Slam).

30th of August, 2000: Magüi, following her incredible series of good results in tie-breaks!, won today 7-6(4) 6-3 vs. Rita Grande - her next match will be probably vs. Amanda Coetzer, that faces Kandar for a place in the third round.

22nd of July 2000: after travelling back from Spain (after attending Arantxa's wedding), Magüi lost her match today vs. Dominique Van Roost 6-3 6-0. In any case a good week for Magüi!

Conchita Injured: Conchita Martínez had to retire from her QF match today vs. Gala León in Sopot due to an injury. Read what Yahoo! published about this injury:

"Top seed Martinez injured, retires from match at Polish Open" July 21, 2000

SOPOT, POLAND (TICKER) -- Top seed Conchita Martinez of Spain may have lost more than a tennis match today in the quarterfinals of the $170,000 Polish Open.

Martinez retired from her match today against countrywoman Gala Leon Garcia after falling and suffering a right wrist injury in the eighth game of the first set. She will return home on Saturday to confirm the extent of the injury, although it is believed she may have suffered a fracture.

--------

As you may know, Conchita is one of my absolute favs in tennis! I just hope it's not that serious. Prying here!

21st of July, 2000: Magüi in to the Semifinals!! For the second time in her career Magüi has made it to the SF of a tournament. After def. 18th of July, 2000: Henin def. Hopmans 6-3 1-2 ret, and will therefore be the next opponent - Magüi will play against Henin for a place in the QF. Henin, from Belgium, is a tough opponent, one of the incoming young players with a better future. Magüi and Henin have never faced each other before in a WTA event. Vamos Magüi!!

17th of July, 2000: Magüi defeats E. Loit of France! The final score was 6-0 7-6 (7-5 in the second set tie-break) to Magüi, who after a brilliant start, had to really fight to win the second set and the match. Loit, I am sure you remember is of infamous memory, as she was the player who defeated Conchita Martinez in the 2nd round of the AO99.

In the second round, Magüi will play either Amanda Hopmans or Justine Henin, a more difficult match in any case.

17th of July, 2000: Today starts the tourney in Belgium - the Sanex Trophy, Magüi will play french E. Loit in the first round. Apparently it has been raining all week long (what's new in Belgium?? , and today, they will be playing the 2nd and 3rd round of the Qualy, where other Spaniards are still playing. BUT, Magüi's match is scheduled for today. Good Luck to Magüi!!
