24th of December, 2000: Merry Christmas and a truly happy new year to everybody!! May all your dreams come true in year 2oo1!! (and may you all come back for more of Magüi in 2001 !!)

16th of December, 2000: The seeds for GoldCoast seem to be the following at the present time:

(1) Conchita Martinez
(2) Patty Schnyder
(3) Silvija Talaja
(4) Magui Serna
(5) Meghann Shaughnessy
(6) Tathiana Garbin
(7) Henrieta Nagyova
(8) Lilia Osterloh

13th of December, 2000: In the following days, and up until the season starts with Magüi playing in Gold Coast (1-7, January), I am going to be updating the Photo section. So keep checking it, cause soon I will have more photographs on display!

3rd of December, 2000: Magüi climbs one spot in the singles and doubles rankings this week (to No.37 and No.62, respectively) despite not playing this week... this climbing in the rankings is due to the retirament of Dominique Van Roost, who no longer has a WTA ranking.

26th of November, 2000: Unfortunately, Spain couldn't win again the title and with both Conchita Martínez and Arantxa Sánchez Vicario injured, the final was lost 5-0. Magüi got to play in the doubles match, playing with Virginia Ruano against the USA team of Jennifer Capriati and Lisa Raymond, losing 4-6 6-4 6-2. In any case, congratulations to all four of them for making it to yet another final and to Magüi for playing in the decisive final. Here's a pic of that day:

25th of November, 2000: It couldn't be. Conchita lost her match vs. Davenport 6-2 6-2. And although I am happy we have been in yet another final I am a bit sad over the way we have lost. I felt we had a chance in both matches vs. Lindsay Davenport. But in the end, Davey toughed it out and stayed in both matches. Anyway, Arantxa and Conchita, girls, you make me so proud to be your fan, every day, every year. This is no exception. Thanks for making it to the final and giving your best out there.

24th of November, 2000: tough luck in the Fed Cup. Spain starts losing 2-0 to the USA. Monica Seles defeated Conchita Martinez 6-2 6-3 without giving Conchita any real chances to get into the match, while Davenport defeated Arantxa just! it was 6-2 1-6 6-3 for Davenport, in a really tight match that could have gone either way. Let's hope tomorrow we can win the 3 matches!

23rd of November, 2000: the rival of Spain will be the USA, who def. the Belgium team 2-1 in the other SF. The other of play will be as follows:

Friday 24 November USA [1] vs. Spain [2]
Conchita Martinez vs. Monica Seles
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario vs. Lindsay Davenport

Saturday 25 November USA [1] vs. Spain [2]
Conchita Martinez vs. Lindsay Davenport
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario vs. Monica Seles
Arantxa/Conchita vs. Raymond/Daveport

Good Luck girls!!!!

22nd of November, 2000: Spain in yet another final of the FED CUP!!, after defeating the Czech Republic 2-1 in their SF!! with the following scores:

ASV def. Bedanova (by the skin of her teeth) 5-7 6-4 6-3
Conchita def. Hrdlikova (by the skin of her teeth too) 7-6 6-7 6-4.
Bendanova / Hrdlickova def Serna/Ruano 1-6 6-3 7-6

What a night!! hehe, I am completely asleep right now, but it was worth staying up!!! Good luck for the final!!!

20th of November, 2000: Not much to tell this week, Magüi moves one spot down to No. 38 in the WTA rankings (singles) and one spot up to No. 63 in the doubles. Magüi didn't play last week. This week she plays the Fed Cup, starting this Tuesday! ¡Vamos España! ¡Vamos Magüi!

11th of November, 2000: The nominations for the FED CUP team for Spain are ready:

1. Conchita Martínez
2. Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario
3. Magüi Serna
4. Virginia Ruano-Pascual

WOW!!!! I absolutely LOVE this team!!! Actually, in a LOL Cups game that I play (tennis game) THESE four are MY team!! (Quijotescas!! ) - I am so delighted I don't even mind if we win! -- although I have to say, I feel we have a good chance here!!

7th of November, 2000: The Fed Cup team of the Czech Republic (that will be the rival of Spain in the Fed Cup semifinal) will be integrated by the following players: 1. Kveta Hrdlickova, 2. Denisa Chladkova, 3. Daniela Bedanova and 4. Adriana Gersi. The Spanish team has not been announced yet, but I hope Magüi will be in it.

6th of November, 2000: As of 5th of November, 2000. Magüi is ranked 28th in the Money Leaders ranking, with $311,384 in winnings during this year 2000... wow! LOL -- loads of money!!

5th of November, 2000: The season is over now. After Leipzig, Magüi only plays the Fed Cup (20-26 Nov), that will be played in USA (Las Vegas) - Spain faces the Czech Republic in the SF, and hopefully, the winner of the other SF (Belgium vs. USA) in the Final.

This has been such a strange season. With Magüi showing her true potential in the Grand Slams and doing virtually nothing in the rest of the season. Let's hope next season will bring the first title for Magüi, who surely has the tennis to start winning tourneys soon!

30th of October, 2000: Oh well, end of the singles season for Magüi with a defeat. She lost 3 and 2 against Silvia Farina. Best of luck for the Fed Cup and next season!

29th of October, 2000: Magüi dropped one place in the singles to be ranked 39th this week, but she climbed 10 positions in the doubles up to the 61st. This week she plays Leipzig, she will play the doubles with Caroline Vis (!) gotta love that girl!!! , I wish I could be there to watch those two together! ¡Vamos Magüi!

28th of October, 2000: Magüi and Laura lost in the QF of Moscow to Halard-Decugis/Sugiyama(1) in a really tight match 7-5 6-4, this could be a good doubles partner for Magüi, I really like Laura Montalvo, I hope they will play more times together.

Also, Magüi will play Leipzig, her last WTA tournament of the season, she faces Silvia Farina-Elia in the first round, she has never before played Silvia, but I think her chances are good. ¡Vamos Magüi!

23th of October, 2000: Magüi lost to Patty Schnyder 7-6(3) 1-6 6-3. Another first round loss for Magüi.. let's hope she can win something in the doubles, where she's playing with Laura Montalvo, a really good doubles player. ¡Animo Magüi!

22th of October, 2000: Magüi will play Patty Schnyder of Switzerland in the first round of the Kremlin Cup. Their head to head is 2-3 for Patty:

1R Hamburg May 1 00: M Serna-LL - P Schnyder 6-4 1-6 7-6(7)
1R Manhattan Beach Aug 9 99: P Schnyder - M Serna-Q 6-3 6-4
QF Gold Coast Jan 4 99: P Schnyder(2) - M Serna(6) 6-0 1-6 6-4
2R Moscow Oct 19 98: M Serna - P Schnyder(4) 7-6(3) 6-4
QF Madrid May 18 98: P Schnyder(3) - M Serna(7) 3-6 7-6(3) 6-4

Always very close matches between these two, the last time they played indoors, Magüi won (in Moscow too)... let's hope she can win here! ¡Vamos Magüi!

In other news, Spain will play the Czech Republic in the SF of the Fed Cup -- this is IMO the easiest rival of the three (USA, Belgium are the others)... but anything can happen I guess, but the chances of YET another final are there.

20th of October, 2000: Next week, Magüi plays at the Princess Cup in Moscow (Russia), the season is basically over for Magüi, who will play Leipzig and then, probably only the Spanish Masters to end up the season.

Also, I won a Journalism Contest organized by Eurosport... This is my article:

Competing Upside-down
by amsog

"No wonder the australians are doing so well in these Olympics, after all, they are not upside-down.

I see the European athletes and I can't help but think that they should get a few free points (or less seconds, or more metres) than the rest. The effort of holding on to the ground must be weighing on their ability to move forward. Actually, I have no trouble imagining all those athletes holding on to the ground trying not to fall off the face of the Earth.

Look at Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario and Conchita Martínez. They were the favourites to dispute the Olympic final in doubles (tennis), but they lost on the second round. Probably Conchita's moonballs did reach the moon this time.

Maybe if I place myself upside down when I watch the tv, I will understand better why, at this ungodly hours, the results of the Spaniards don't seem to make any sense.

Sydney 2000 are the games for the insomniacs.

Tonight, I am going to place my tv upside-down and hope to see some Spanish athlete winning a medal".

--------------

17th of October, 2000: Magüi lost today in Linz vs. Ai Sugiyama 7-6(4) 6-3. Ending her great streak in the tie-breaks.

Also I just posted the Filderstadt report by Caz! don't miss it!!! To read it click here.

15th of October, 2000: Magüi plays Linz (Ladies Generali Open) this week, she faces Ai Sugiyama in the first round, she has never played against Ai before, but we can anticipate that it is going to be tough match...

8th of October, 2000: Caz and myself are just back from Filderstadt, where Magüi played not that great (unfortunately), soon we will add a report about our days in the tournament! Now Magüi plays Zurich, but she has already lost in the singles to Amanda Coetzer 6-4 6-1. The season is almost over for Magüi - a season full of GS successes and of early loses in smaller tournaments.
