23rd of June, 2001: Unfortunatelly, Magüi couldn't defeat Lindsay Davenport and lost the final 6-2 6-0. In any case, great showing by Magüi who has played some great tennis this week and goes on to Wimbledon with a lot of confidence.

Best of luck at Wimbledon, Magüi, and congrats for a great week of tennis!!!

22nd of June, 2001: Magüi in the Final: Eastbourne 2001

Magüi just defeated Elena Likhovtseva (RUS) 5-7 6-1 7-5!! I think this is simply one of Magüi's best come-backs ever!! after losing the first set in important matches, it can be a bit hard to come back, but today she was just brilliant and full of confidence!

Now that you've made it this far, Magüi, win the whole thing!! Get Lindsay, paint the lines, serve aces, buy drinks to the line judges if necessary!! . Good Luck Magüi, believe in yourself and you'll make it.

21st of June, 2001: Magüi has defeated Meghann [7] 6-0, 7-6 (7-3)!!!! What an amazing tournament for Magüi (queen of tie-breaks!) -- now Magüi will play Elena Likhovtseva (RUS) in the SF!! After defeating Frazier, Malevaa [4] and Meghann [7] (I am not even attempting to spell that surname), Magüi has to believe in herself and win this match too!! Vamos Magüi!! On to the final, girl!! - This is the SF line-up:

SF 1: Lindsay Davenport [1] vs. Chanda Rubin
SF 2: Magüi Serna vs. Elena Likhovtseva

In the dubs, Magüi and Sandrine ended up losing their match vs. Navratilova/Sanchez-Vicario today, a match that was cancelled yesterday when the score was one set each, the final score was 7-6 4-6 4-6 to Navratilova and Arantxa.

19th of June, 2001: Magüi def. Maggie Malevaa 7-5 6-2!!! This is a great result!!! Now she will face in the QF the winner of the match between (7)Meghann Shaughnessy and Q-Evie Dominikovic, so probably a good QF match between Magüi and Meghann!!! This could be a really nice match, and hopefully Magüi will be able to defeat Meghann!

18th of June, 2001: Magüi def. Amy Frazier (USA) 6-1, 6-2! yay!!! And now she plays Malevaa in the second round. Let's go Magüi!!

Magüi plays today vs. Amy Frazier (USA) in the first round of Eastbourne, not an easy match, but let's hope she'll do well. In the dubs, Magüi will play with Testud this week, a really good partner, but they play Martina Navratilova and Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario in the first round. Another tough match. Animo Magüi! Take a look at the draw here.

16th of June, 2001: Back again! , as I am sure you all know by now, Magüi lost in the second round to Nicole Pratt, she also lost in the doubles in the second round to Crook/Davies 6/4 6/7[5] 6/2. Now we move on to Eastbourne (or another Eastbourne website). Better luck there! Vamos Magüi.

12th of June, 2001: Magüi and Elena Bovina defeated Boogert and Oremans 7-6(7-4) 7-5!! what a great result!! Magüi will play her 2nd round match tomorrow when she will face Nicole Pratt, not an easy player, but let's hope Magüi can defeat her!

In other news, Wimbledon will have 32 seeds instead of the usual 16 (and from now on, every GS will have 32 seeds), which means that Magüi will be seeded for Wimbledon (specially considering her good record on grass), this is really good news, as Magüi will have better chances of defending the points from last year!

Also I will be gone until Saturday morning, so no more news until then, sorry!

11th of June, 2001: Magüi will be playing in the dubs with Elena Bovina. Yet a new partner, this one is a hard hitter, so maybe they'll have luck, in any case they face Boogert/Oremans in the first round, a very experienced, really good team, so I think it's going to be hard for them to make it into the second round. We'll know tomorrow in any case, Magüi and Bovina play the third turn in Court 2, so best of luck girls! give your best out there!

10th of June, 2001: The draw for the DSF Classic is ready. Take a look at it, and good luck to Magüi in Birmingham!!

7th of June, 2001: I am briefly back, so I will be able to update at least a bit. We saw Magüi at the Madrid Open and at Roland Garros, she was recovering from an injury in her calf and didn't seem to be feeling very comfortable on the court. I hope this week of rest will help her and she'll be feeling better for the grass season, which starts next Monday. Amazingly enough, grass is Magüi's best surface, so let's hope she can win a title either in Birmingham or in Eastbourne and do really well again in Wimbledon this year.

New pics and reports of the summer of tennis to come later in the year!

22nd of May, 2001: Tennis season has started!!! Half of Magüi Mania is already following Magüi all over the place! Mel, Caz and myself (Beatriz) are at the Madrid Open. We'll now go to Roland Garros where we'll meet with Stacey (4th Magüi Maniac), then go on to Eastbourne and Wimbledon, where we'll meet Paula (5th Magüi Maniac). So only Kat will be missing this year, but I am sure we'll make loads of friends this summer and turn all of them into Magüi Maniacs.

On with the tennis!!

This probably means that I won't be able to update the site for a while, but we'll tell you all about it when we are back!

15th of May, 2001: Unfortunatelly, Habsudova/Jeyaseelan def. K Clijsters/Magüi Serna 7-6(5) 6-2. So now, we move to the Villa de Madrid, and let's hope she'll do well there.

In other news (completely unrelated! LOL) both Caz and Mel will be coming to see the Madrid Open to cheer for Magüi and Arantxa! Mel has told me that she has braided her hair with extensions in red and yellow for the summer of tennis, so that she doesn't need to paint it. Practical, huh? ... yeah, I am soooo not going anywhere with her!

14th of May, 2001: Magüi played today her match vs. Nagyova, and lost 2-6 6-3 6-2. She stays ranked No.26 in the singles and moves to No.41 in the dubs. It seems it will be possible to follow live scores here: http://www.sports.com/tennis/live2.html if you are interested.

She will be playing the dubs with Kim Klijsters, yet another change of partner, I really wish Magüi could settle down with someone! she could get much better results, I feel that, at this point, anyone is a good choice as long as they stick together. Magüi and Kim play Habsudova/Jeyaseelan in the first round, I have no idea which are their chances of winning , I think we will talk to Magüi about the orange skirt and her choice in dubs partner sometime this summer . Anyway, best of luck in the dubs with Kim!!

11th of May, 2001: And now we move to the "Foro Italico", to Rome!! Magüi will be seeeded in Rome because so many top players have withdrawn. She'll be the No.16 seed (for the moment). The singles draw has already been released and Magüi will play Nagyova in the first round. Good luck!

9th of May, 2001: Unfortunately, Magüi lost to Nathalie Dechy (FRA) 7-6(5) 6-. Better luck in Rome, Magüi!! Also they changed the score in the official website and now it appears that Magüi and Jennifer lost in the dubs (same score only it's the other team winning), so I guess we move to Rome now.

8th of May, 2001: Magüi and Jennifer Capriati defeated Grant / Weingärtner 3-6 6-4 6-4, and now they will face Arendt / Vis in the next round, a much harder team. But let's hope they can do well, considering this is the first time those two play together. I wish Magüi would find a regular partner to play dubs with, I think she could do really well if she only found a partner, just like last year she played with Meghann of the impossible surname. In any case well done Magüi and Jen and good luck in the next round!

Magüi will play tomorrow in the singles vs. Nathalie Dechy, who is a very good and dangerous player, who defeated Magüi the last time they played (in the Olympic Games) but let's hope Magüi can play her best tennis and defeat her.

7th of May, 2001: Magüi won her match vs. Panova (RUS) in the first round of the German Open 64 62, a very good start! She plays tomorrow in the dubs, partnering Jennifer Capriati and they will face Grant / Weingärtner. Her next opponent in the singles will be the winner of the match Ruano Pascual (ESP) vs. Dechy (FRA), I hope it's vs. Vivi!!

Magüi is ranked No.26 this week (Four down).

4th of May, 2001: Magüi and Arantxa lost in the dubs 6-1 6-1 to Sidot/Tatarkova. Not a good week, no sir. Oh well, better luck next week!! . C'mon Magüi! Show how great your tennis is!! Next week stop is when Magüi will slay away her opponents, and conquer the German Open (BERLIN), where Conchita is the defending champion. Best of luck to all the Spanish girls!

3rd of May, 2001: Magüi and Arantxa [2] def. Bacheva and Maleeva 26 62 64. It was a very close match, but in any case, congrats to Magüi and Arantxa, and let's keep going!! Hopefully this can be a title for them!!

J was in Hamburg yesterday and took some pics, you can see a first pic here: Pic by J

1st of May, 2001: Unfortunately, Magüi lost her match today, losing in straight sets to Andrea Glass (GER), the final score was 6-4 6-3. Let's hope that Magüi will have better luck in the doubles and do well with Arantxa.

30th of April, 2001: Magüi plays in Hamburg this week, she has been seeded n.8 and will face Andrea Glass in the first round of the singles. In the doubles, she partners Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario and they are the n.2 seeds and will face BACHEVA Lubimora/MALEEVA Magdalena in the first round. Good luck Magüi!!

Here's the singles draw:

Williams(1) - bye
Leon Garcia - Q
Farina Elia - Garbin
Glass (WC) - Serna(8)

Sanchez Vicario(4)- bye
Q - Nagyova
Q - Dokic
Dragomir - Maleeva(5)

Shaughnessy(7) - Brandi
Black - Hrdlickova
Schnyder(WC) - Schett
Martinez(3) - bye

Henin(6) - Sidot
Likhovtseva - Q
Panova - Lamade(WC)
Coetzer(2) - bye

24th of April, 2001: Magüi doesn't play this week, so she'll have almost 15 days total to rest and to train for the following clay tournaments. This week Magüi is ranked No.23 in singles (2 down) and 46 in doubles (3 down), she'll need some good results and that 16th seeding place for RG isn't all that far away!

15th of April, 2001: Magüi finally lost to Bovina in the 2nd round in Estoril (a tourney that was finally won by Angeles Montolio! Congrats to Angels!!) and won't play anymore until the 30th of April, in Hamburg, which fits me just fine, as I will be away the next week! This week Magüi reaches career high ranking in singles, and will be ranked No.21 - really close to entering the top20 for the first time in her career. In dubs, she loses two places and will be ranked No.43 this week.

10th of April, 2001: Magüi won her match vs. Barbara Rittner 6-3 6-4, it was a tough match with many breaks of service, but in the end, Magüi hold her serve in the important games. Well done Magüi! and now let's go get Elena Bovina (RUS) in the next round!!! Elena Bovina is one of the younger players on tour, a power player, and she's (more or less) 12 feet tall , Magüi will have to make her move and force UE from her opponent.

9th of April, 2001: Magüi moves up in the rankings! She's ranked No.23 in sigles and No.41 in doubles this week! highest of the season so far. Congratulations to Magüi! She will be playing doubles with Boogert in the Estoril Open (seeded 4 as a team), and they will face Hrdlickova/Rittner in the first round, a good team. Also Magüi [5] will face Rittner in the singles in the first round. I really like Rittner, but I hope Magüi will continue with the form she showed last week and be able to defeat her!

8th of April, 2001: Magüi -- Porto Open 2001 Runner Up

You were brilliant this week Magüi! Keep the good results coming! Now Magüi moves to play the Estoril Open, and will face Rittner in the first round. Good luck Magüi!!

8th of April, 2001: Unfortunately, Magüi lost to Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario 3-6 1-6. In any case congratulations to Magüi for a great tournament! She will move up in the rankings to No.23, getting closer to her all-time best ranking (22) -- let's hope Magüi gets a lot of confidence and wins some title this year (preferably the Madrid Open! ) ¡¡Animo Magüi!!

7th of April, 2001: Magüi reaches her first WTA final!!!

Magüi queen of tie-breaks strikes yet again!!! She defeated Silvija Talaja 6-3 7-6(5) in the semifinal in Porto and is now in the final, where she will face Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario [1], in an all-spanish final! -- The last meeting between Arantxa and Magüi was last year at RG, where Arantxa ended up winning, but Magüi put a great fight, let's hope the story is reversed this time!

Congratulations to Magüi for a great result in her first tourney on clay of the season!! With her appearance in the final, Magüi will climb in the rankings to No.23 at least. ¡¡Vamos Magüi!! One more match girl! You can win this!!! Pío Pío Pío!! ¡¡Vamos canariona!!

6th of April, 2001: Magüi queen of tie-breaks strikes again!!! hehehe, Magüi defeated Rita Kuti Kis (by the skin of her teeth) in a really close match: 3/6, 6/4, 7/6(5) coming back from losing the first set (which is not very common in Magüi) to win the match and get into her first SF appearance of the year. Now she will face Talaja [5] for a place in the final. ¡¡Vamos Magüi!! You rule girl!!! Here two pics of Magüi at the Oporto Open:

Singles (6th of APR)

Doubles (4th of APR)

Also, there is an interview with Magüi on the Portuguese site of the Oporto Open, you can read it (if you understand portuguese) here: http://www.portoopen.com/web/serna.shtml

5th of April, 2001: Magüi won both her singles matches today!! after being misleaded by the first reports into thinking that she has lost to Boogert, the information was corrected (after I spent the afternoon glaring at people... sight ), Magüi first defeated Boogert 6-2 3-6 6-4 and then she took on Iroda Tulyaganova after a tiny break and defeated her too 6-4 6-4! So Magüi is already in the QF!!! Still today Magüi has another match scheduled (the third of the day) and will play dubs with Arantxa -- although I am not sure if that will happen today. But great result in the singles!! Next Magüi will face Rita Kuti Kis in the QF ¡¡Vamos Magüi!!

3rd of April, 2001: Arantxa Sánchez and Magüi Serna are already in the next round! (QF), after defeating the Itlians Silvia Farina/Giulia Casoni 7-6(5), 7-6(5). Now they will play vs. Mª Jose Martínez/Ana Isabel Medina, best of luck!!

1st of April, 2001: Magüi plays now in Oporto, Portugal, she faces Boogert, Kristie (NED) in the first round, not an easy player, but I am sure she can defeat her. Magüi is seeded 3rd and there is a possibility that she will face Arantxa (seeded 1st) in the final! Let's hope that's the case! She plays doubles with Arantxa, and they (Arantxa/Magüi) will face the italians Casoni, Giula/Farina Elia, Silvia in the first round. Let's hope they can take the title in doubles at least!!
