MAGÜI SERNA
NEWS

25th of September, 2001: Unfortunately, Magüi lost to Kveta 6-1 6-3. Best of luck in the next tourney Magüi!!!

24th of September, 2001: Magüi will play vs. someone coming from the qualifying. That's the good news. The bad news is that 'someone' is Kveta Hrdlickova (CZE). Yeah, tell me about it! Oh well, hopefully, Magüi will be well rested and wanting this match and play her best. Best of luck, but it's going to be a tough one. In the dubs, Magüi will play with Laura Montalvo!!!! Gotta love Laura!! and she's a really good doubles player too! , they will play Farina-Elia/Oremans in the first round, not an easy match either, but with Laura I reckon they can win this match.

22nd of September, 2001: This week Magüi plays in Germany, the Sparkassen Cup (Leipzig), I haven't seen the draw yet, so no idea who she's going to beat in the first round , but I'll let you know as soon as I know! lol

18th of September, 2001: Magüi is not playing this week, so not much to say really. She's now committed to play Leipzig and Moscow [if you understand russian ], I have also seen her name in the Filderstadt committments. She's ranked No.33 in singles and No.47 in dubs this week.

13th of September, 2001: Back! I am sure you missed me .

I have to say I am still in shock over the horror that just took place in NY... a prayer for all those trapped in the collapse of the twin towers and pentagon and for their families and friends. May you all have the strenght to survive this day.

Let's update everybody. It hasn't been a great summer for Magüi:

  • Basle (30th July - 5th August): lost in the second round against Greta ARN (GER) 6-3 6-0
  • Canadian Open (13th to 19th August): lost in the second round against Jelena DOKIC (YUG) 6-1 6-4
  • New Haven (19th to 25th August): lost in the first round against Anke HUBER (GER) 6-2 6-2
  • US Open (27th August - 9th September): lost in the first round against Eva BES (ESP) 6-3 6-1

I know that the other Magüi site (Cristina's and Sonia's one) has some new pictures, so go check them out at http://www.oocities.org/maguiserna/

26th of July, 2001: Well, I am probably not going to be able to update the site with any regularity for quite a while, as I am going to be moving a bit for the rest of the summer and then, probably moving to UK in September. I will try to update whenever I can, though. I wish everyone a happy summer and, hopefully, there'll be plenty of great news about Magüi! Have fun everybody!

23rd of July, 2001: Magüi won't play this week, she's probably celebrating her doubles victory! . In the rankings, Magüi drops one place in the singles this week, to No.28 and climbs 9 places in the doubles rankings to No.43. Ok, so it's a week off for everybody, for Magüi and for me! hehe, although I'll keep looking for a pic of Magüi with that dubs trophy!

22nd of July, 2001: First Career Doubles Title for Magüi!!

Magüi just won in the dubs final of the Sanex Trophy (Knokke-Heist) today, a Tier IV, partnering Virginia Ruano against Ruxandra DRAGOMIR-ILIE/Andreea VANC. This is her first career title in either singles or doubles in the WTA tour. Congrats Magüi and Virginia!!! Here's the road to the title:

20th of July, 2001: Magüi lost in the QF vs. Kim Clijsters 6-1 4-6 6-3, she fought a lot, but in the end she had a lot of unforced errors, just in her last serving serve when she was 5-3 down, she made three double faults and of course lost the game and the match. But nevermind Magüi, you have to believe in yourself, you can do it! that serve is a wonderful weapon keep working on it and you'll be making three aces for game instead!

Finally, we have Stacey's profile up in the "About Us" section! don't miss it!

18th of July, 2001: Magüi is already in the QF! She won her match today against Barbara Schwarzt by walk over, as Barbara had to retire apparently due to a bad stomach ache. Now Magüi will play against the winner of the match between Virginia Ruano and Kim Clijsters. Also Magüi is playing in the dubs with Vivi and they will play against De Los Rios/Diaz-Oliva for a place in the QF. Good luck Vivi/Magüi!!!

16th of July, 2001: Magüi plays at the Sanex Trophy this week, unfortunatelly, there is no website for this tournament. Magüi won today her first round match vs. Bacheva (second week in a row that she plays Bacheva) 6-4 6-4. The draw is as follows:

    Clijsters - Cervanova
    Qual - Ruano Pascual
    Schartz - Callens
    Serna - Bacheva

    Montolio - Kleinova
    Poetsjek - Qual
    Toelyaganova - Danillidou
    Schnyder - MJ Martinez

    Diaz-Oliva - Torrens-Valero
    Kruger - Medina Garrigues
    Marrero - Schnitzer
    Dokic - Chladkova

    Schiavone - Husarova
    Leon Garcia - Dragomir
    Qual - De Los Rios
    Farina - Qual

This week Magüi is ranked No.27 (2 up) in the singles and No.52 (1 up) in the doubles.

13th of July, 2001: Magüi lost today to Cristina Torrens 6:4 6:3. Which now leaves the following SF line up:

    Torrens-Valero vs. Leon-Garcia
    Medina-Garrigues vs. Carlsson

I hope at least this one will go to a Spanish girl.

12th of July, 2001: Magüi defeated Bacheva today 6-2 7-5! In the dubs, she lost in three sets to the No.3 seeds Carlsson/Plischke in the first round yesterday 6/3 4/6 6/3, not bad for her first ever match with Schiavone, and she's still going strong in the singles and keeps her chances of winning the tournament going on to the QF where she will face Cristinita Torrens [7], let's go Magüi!!

10th of July, 2001: We have a newly designed Reports section, which includes the same stuff as always, (which should now be easier to access) and a brand new report of Wimbledon 2001 by our Welsh Maniac: Siân. Go read it!

On the tennis news from Palermo (Italy), we hope Magüi is enjoying the city and getting a nice tan . Magüi played today on Centre Court at around 15:30 CET her first round match vs. Klara Koukalova (Cze) and won in three sets 6:3 3:6 6:2, now she'll face the winner of the match Bacheva (Bul)-Vierin (Ita) in the 2nd round. Vamos Magüi.

9th of July, 2001: I have posted the Palermo draw in the forum, hopefully, this is the right one! . Magüi will play in the dubs with Schiavone, a tough player who can teach Magüi a few things about resiliance and fighting spirit I am sure, so hopefully they'll do well together, although it is hard to get any good results when you are shifting partners every tourney! I liked how well she played with Justine last week at Wimbledon, although I am still annoyed Justine pulled out of the dubs, but that is a partnership that could work.

The following sections have been updated:

    • About Us (new distribution and waves to our new friends!)

    • Sian's profile (accesible from About Us)
    • Stacey's profile (accesible from About Us)
    • Photos (new pictures in Gallery 1)

8th of July, 2001: Magüi will play at the Internazionali Femmininili de Palermo this week, I haven't been able to find a website for this tourney (which is a Tier IV). It seems the draw Alfonso posted on the forum wasn't correct, apparently Magüi will play Koukalova in the first round now, but I am not yet sure about this either, sorry for the trouble in getting the right information! In any case, good luck to Magüi! BTW, I found a pic of Magüi at Eastbourne, it is from Tennis on the Line, and the pic is copyright of Beth Knizer

    Singles (Eastbourne 2001)

    7th of July, 2001: ¡¡Feliz San Fermín!!

Magüi's schedule after Wimbledon will be: Palermo, Knokke-Heist, Casablanca and Basel, I think it's safe to say Magüi wants her first WTA title asap! Vamos Magüi! Win the four tourneys in a row!! This week she drops to No.29 in the singles rankings (5 down), which is not that bad a result considering she was defending QF points of Wimbledon from last year, but thanks to her final appearance at Eastbourne she stays more or less with the same points, now if she can do well in these four smaller tourneys that she has entered (and win all of them ), she'll be able to climb back in the rankings in no time!

6th of July, 2001: I almost forgot!! Magüi Mania is One Year Old Today!!! WOW! This year has flown by! It has been a great pleasure to follow Magüi's carreer during these 12 months!

    Happy B'day Magüi Mania!!!

Well, we are back from Wimbledon! We stayed this year until the second Wednesday (one day more than last year!) - we got the opportunity to see Magüi in the singles (lost to Petrova in court 2 - damn that court!), mixed (playing with an aussie ) and in the dubs -- we paid 41 pounds for a court 1 ticket to see Magüi play in the dubs and due to the fact that Justine Henin pulled out of the dubs didn't get to see Magüi!!!! Justine, honey, you owe me 41 pounds!!! Anyway, we had a great time, and hopefully soon there will be some reports about the 2001 Summer of tennis: Madrid Open, Roland Garros, Eastbourne and Wimbledon! I can already tell you that we have two new Magüi Maniacs: Sian and Sandrine!
