4th of December, 2001: Magüi has changed locations. Now she's back to her roots (Gran Canaria).

Magüi Serna, training yesterday at El Cortijo Club de Campo.
|
Just yesterday, there was an article in a spanish newspaper (La Provincia Digital) about Magüi. She has decided to move back to Gran Canaria (where she's originally from) and changed trainer (new trainer is Fernando García Lleo) in hopes that her game and ranking will improve next year. You can read the article (sorry it's in Spanish) clicking here.
There also a few comments about how Magüi sees the tour and the competition these days. Hopefully, this change will be for good and Magüi will play her best (which we all know it's darn good!) next year, and also, hopefully, repeat some of her best performances (or even raise above them) and break the top20! ...this looks like Santa's list
- - I think I will write the "What Magüi Mania wants for 2002" letter before the 25th Dec this year, and we'll see if any of it comes true!
1st of December, 2001: Hey guys! Stace (one of the six original Magüi Maniacs) has got a website now! she's the WORLD DRUG FREE POWERLIFTING CHAMPION!!!! please do visit her website and let her know how great she is! Go to Stacey's website
30th of November, 2001: Magüi will start off the year playing the first big event of the year: Sydney (Adidas International), January 7-13 (Tier II), she managed to get in the main draw by the skin of her teeth!! A very tough draw:
1. Davenport 8. Testud 15. Coetzer
2. Capriati 9. Shaughnessy 16. Tulyaganova
3. Hingis 10. Farina Elia 17. Schett
4. Clijsters 11. Dementieva 18. Raymond
5. S Williams 12. Maleeva 19. Montolio
6. Henin 13. Martinez (inj.) 20. Nagyova
7. Mauresmo 14. Sanchez-Vicario 21. Serna
Good luck Magüi!!!
26th of November, 2001: Some news... when the season is over it's harder to find things to talk about in here!
.
End of Season Singles Ranking: 25 (973 points)
End of Season Doubles Ranking: 50 (877 points)
Nadia Petrova told our friend Juan, who very nicely let us know [bunch of Magüi Maniacs that were at the Fed Cup, namely Caz, Mel and Bea (that's me)] that she'll play at the beginning of the year with Magüi but I guess I'll believe it when I see it.
In other news, the Fed Cup draw for 2002 has been announced today, Spain will face Hungary in the first round on home ground. What is the format of this year's Fed Cup you are asking yourselves. Well, I have no idea, knowing the ITF probably this time the players will have to draw straws to play each others and decide the matches, and the line judges will be issued coins to determine all line calls by tossing the coin... keeping in line with how the ITF people seem to make their decisions regarding the Fed Cup. In any case, hopefully, Magüi will be on the team this time. Or the Magüi Maniacs will have to do something about Mico Margets' body hair (something painful
).
26th of October, 2001: The Spanish team that will take part in the Federation Cup was announced today:
- Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario.
- Conchita Martínez Bernat.
- Gala León García.
- Virginia Ruano-Pascual.
I am not sure why Magüi is not in the team, as she is the third Spanish player by ranking, although probably Gala or Angeles Montolio has better results on clay than Magüi this season. If clay season was the decisive factor I am not sure either why Angeles Montolio was not in the team either, as she's got by far the best clay season (with two titles), or even Cristina Torrens Valero... In any case, now Magüi can rest and practice a bit for the upcoming Australian Summer season, and surely, Gala deserves also a chance to make the team seeing how she's been unfairly dismissed in previous ties. Best of luck to the Spanish team!
24th of October, 2001: Magüi lost both in the singles and in the doubles. Bad luck in her last tourney of the year. I'll let you know later on in what position in the rankings she finishes off this year. In any case, not a good year, and not an awful year either, with Magüi reaching her first two WTA finals: Oporto and Eastbourne and winning her first doubles title (w/Ruano-Pascual): Sanex Trophy (Knokke-Heist). Now the only competition left is the Federation Cup, where hopefully, Magüi will be playing for Spain.
21th of October, 2001: Well, with Venus Williams withdrawing from Linz (gasp! big surprise, huh?
), they have moved the whole draw around a bit and now Magüi faces Arantxa in the first round. That's what I call rotten luck. Anyway, best of luck both to Arantxa and to Magüi! Go girls!!!
In the dubs, Magüi and Laura continue playing together! (YAY!), and they play a tough team in the first round: Els CALLENS and Chanda RUBIN. You can see the draws here: singles draw and doubles draw.
19th of October, 2001: Last tournament of the year for Magüi before the Fed Cup: Generali Open at Linz (Austria). Again, Magüi hasn't been very lucky with the draw, and she'll get to play Nathalie Tauziat in her first round match (sigh). The doubles draw is not yet out, so I am not sure who she'll be playing with, hopefully, it will be with Laura Montalvo again! Best of luck Magüi!!
Also, Caz has *finally* send me the Madrid 2001 report! so go read it in the Reports Section!!!!
15th of October, 2001: Magüi lost her singles match today, Barbara Schett defeated her 6-1 6-2. Now Magüi and Laura also lost to Testud/Vinci in the dubs, the score was really close and they lost a 6-3 2-0 lead, to end up losing 6-3 4-6 6-7. Better luck in the next one!
14th of October, 2001: Magüi plays this week at the SwissCom Challenge, in Zurich (Switzerland), she gets to play Barbara SCHETT (AUS) in the first round (groan) -- you can check the singles draw here. Magüi will continue playing with Laura Montalvo (yeah!) and they face Testud and Vinci in the first round (groan again) take a look at the doubles draw here. What a rotten luck with draws!!! argghhh. Ok, so there are no easy players, but surely some are harder than others, and Magüi always draws the tough ones!
11th of October, 2001: Magüi lost today 4-6 4-6 to Sandrine Testud in the second round at Filderstadt (Germany), still not a bad result considering she defeated Meghann on the first round. Magüi and Laura are also out in the doubles after their loss yesterday to Chanda Rubin and Jennifer Capriati.
9th of October, 2001: Magüi and Laura managed to win the qualifying and are now in the Main Draw in Filderstadt! Congrats to them! they seem to be a good team. Magüi will play today both of her matches, in singles playing Meghann and in doubles she and Laura will face Capriati/Rubin, not easy matches, but best of luck!
UPDATE: Magüi defeated Meghann [8]!!!!! 6-3 6-4!!! what a great result!! and a few bonus points too!
, congrats to Magüi, the next match will be against the winner of the match between Maja MATEVZIC [Q] and Sandrine TESTUD, not an easy match either, but hey! if she can take Meghann, she can take Sandrine or Maja!

7th of October, 2001: Magüi and Laura lost in the semifinals to Dementieva/Krasnoroutskaya 6-2 6-2. Anyhow a good result, hopefully, Magüi and Laura will continue playing together! Now we move to Filderstadt, Magüi hasn't been very lucky with the draw and she'll meet Meghann in the first round, at least Magüi knows how Meghann plays so hopefully, she'll be more confident and play her best!
2nd of October, 2001: Well, it seems nothing is working out for Magüi these last few weeks, she lost in the first round in Moscow to Anastasia Myskina (RUS), who entered the draw with a WC. The score was very one sided: 6-2 6-2 for Myskina, a young and promising russian player, who develops her best game on fast surfaces. It's a hard time for Magüi, I am sure, but I also know she'll get out of this funk and get some good results soon, a pity there aren't more grass tournaments around, cause Magüi plays with such confidence in that surface... Believe in yourself Magüi! You have enough talent to be in the top20 or higher! So, a ¡vamos! for Magüi and hopefully, some good result in her next tourney.
But not everything is bad news! Magüi is playing with Laura Montalvo and they are through to the Semifinals already! I already said we, in Magüi Mania, love Laura Montalvo, but we love her even more when she plays well AND with Magüi!
Let's go girls!
