MAGÜI SERNA
NEWS
23rd of March, 2002: Magüi and Nagyova lost to Dechy and Tu 2-6 7-5 6-3 in a very close match... what bad luck for Magüi... at least I found a couple of pics of Magüi smiling. Here are two pics of Magüi when she was giving to Mercedes Paz a present as a thank-you for the help received these years (Mercedes Paz from Argentina is Magüi's "TUTOR" in the young stars programme of the WTA tour).

20th of March, 2002: Well, unfortunatelly, I am again the bearer of bad news. Vanessa Webb def. Magüi 6-3 6-2 today. It's hard to tell what happened, because Magüi is head and shoulders above Webb, but it seems her confidence right now is very low. All we can say is: ánimo, Magüi!!! the results will come! In the dubs, Magüi plays with Nagyova, and they will face Dechy/Tu, an improving team this year... Good luck!
19th of March, 2002: Back! Magüi plays this week at Miami (Nasdaq-100 Open), USA. Last year Magüi made it to the 3th Round and is defending 63 points. Problem is, with her last results she has dropped a bit in the ranking and she is unseeded (she's at No. 38 this week). In the first round she will play someone from the Qualifying, yet to be determined, and in the second round she has a tough match against Meghann, but both of the times these two have played (Eastbourne 2001 and Stuttgart 2001), Magüi won, so let's hope she can play her best and get some wins here. You can see the whole draw here.
10th of March, 2002: Well, guys the bad luck keeps coming our way... Magüi lost in her first match against Husarova, who is all of a sudden playing the best tennis of her career. Also in the dubs Magüi/Conchita lost in the first round... Well, all I can say is, don't let this get to you Magüi! You have the talent and the tennis and the results will eventually come! keep trying hard and the luck will turn your way! So, no tennis this week guys, because Indian Wells continues into its second week without Magüi.
6th of March, 2002: The draws of Indian Wells are out! Magüi will be seeded and gets a bye in the first round, she will play the winner of the match between Husarova/Qualifier in the second round. In the doubles Magüi will play again with Conchita Martinez, but they have drawn the third seeds in the first round: Paola and Vivi, so it will be a tough match! but hopefully they can win it!! Vamos Magüi! and Conchita!!
1st of March, 2002: While we wait for Indian Wells to start, you guys can entertain yourselves reading Mel's report from the Madrid Open 2001! it's in our Report section, and I have just uploaded it for your viewing pleasure! I think Mel has left some of the most juicy parts out, but she might have forgotten (or blocked) them... due to excess of alcohol or something ... sooooo, c'mon! go read the report!
26th of February, 2002: Well, that was a short tourney for Magüi, she lost both in the dubs and in the singles in the first round. Panova def. Magüi 6-1 6-2 and Marta/Mariajo defeated Schett/Magüi 6-4 6-2... Magüi did well last year in Scottsdale, so this means she will drop a few places in the ranking... I am guessing she will be around No.35 next week. Better luck then.
24th of February, 2002: The draws of Scottsdale (State Farm Tennis Classic, Arizona, USA) are available now! Magüi will play in the first round against Tatiana Panova, a tough rival, but one that Magüi can defeat. In the doubles, Magüi is pairing up again with Barbara Schett... who knows why! lol - but looking at the bright side of this pair, Schett gets photographed a *lot* so chances are that if they win some matches, we'll get to see a bit of Magüi somewhere! they face Marrero/Martinez in the first round... at least some Spanish in the second round no matter who wins... I think this is the best draw Magüi has had in a tourney (not Slam) this year, so let's hope she can win a couple of rounds here. You can look at the singles draw here and at the doubles draw here
21st of February, 2002: So how is everybody doing? I am working waaaay too hard and have a nasty cold! lol - yeah, I know, quit complaining! Well, soon enough we will have Magüi back on the court! Here's Magüi's schedule for the following couple of weeks:
Week of February 25th: Scottsdale, Arizona, USA
Week of March 4th: Indian Wells, California, USA
Week of April 1st: Porto, Portugal (seed 2 in acceptance list)
Week of April 8th: Estoril, Portugal (seed 2 in acceptance list)
6th of February, 2002: Magüi was not very lucky and lost in the first round of the Open Gaz de France (Paris) to Serra-Zanetti (who just comes from making the QF at the AO!) in a tough three setter: 2-6, 7-5 and 6-4... in the doubles playing with Schett it is yet unclear whether she lost or won, as Yahoo! the Sanex WTA and the Official Gaz de France website all offer different scores of their first round match!
In any case, at least she was having a good time, check the pic of the players' party (in case you can't tell that's: Angeles Montolio, Cristina Torrens, Magüi, Marta Marrero and Eva Bes... well, a couple of weeks of rest now until the american season starts. I think she'll play next in Scottsdale, the 25th of February, so see you then guys! have a great month!

30th of January, 2002: Magüi and Asa lost in the doubles to Dokic/Tulyaganova 1-6 4-6. So next tourney for Magüi will be the Open Gaz de France (Paris Indoors)... hopefully she can get a better result there... last year she got to the 2nd round where she lost to Amélie Mauresmo in the third set in a great effort by Magüi, who was very close to defeating the french girl... I have to say that all the orange jokes originated in this tourney last year, when between the pink background and the bad netcam pics, I thought Magüi was wearing an orange skirt! I was convinced otherwise, but not before I managed to convince all of them that what Magüi needed was to wear orange clothes!!!
29th of January, 2002: Bad luck for Magüi, she lost to Barbara Schett 1-6 3-6, in what is her best effort against Barbara Schett, but still far from taking a set from the austrian girl. Let's hope for a better result in the doubles.
28th of January, 2002: Magüi will play with Asa Svensson in the dubs, they will face Dokic/Tulyaganova (groan) in the first round. Best of luck Magüi!! also, Hiraku is going to the Toray, she's not a Magüi Maniac (yet), but she did took a pic of Magüi yesterday! you can see it here.
27th of January, 2002: Magüi is not being very lucky with draws this year so far... she gets to play Barbara Schett (AUS) in the first round of the Toray Pan Pacific (Tokyo), a tough match, but let's hope Magüi can do well! You can follow the draw here.
24th of January, 2002: Well, it couldn't be. Magüi and Conchita lost in the SF to Arantxa and Daniela Hantuchova, they had their chances in the first set, breaking the serve of the other team 3 times, but Conchita was unable to hold her serve in the first set and they ended up losing it 5-7. Then, right at the beginning of the second set Magüi lost her serve to start trailing down 0-1 and although they managed to equal to 2-2, Arantxa and Daniela were stronger from that point onwards and closed the set without more problems.
Well, I am sorry, but I can not be dissapointed even if they lost! it has been an extraordinary two weeks for Magüi! she made it to the third round in singles (best result since 1997) and to the SF in the doubles (best result at GS ever for her!), and I am sure she had a wicked time playing with good ole Conchi (Magüi Maniacs let's say it! Neeeeeeuh! ), we even had one of our Magüi Maniacs in the stand cheering!! Although I am sure Stacey was missing all of us!
We are on to the next tourney! it will be the Toray Pan Pacific (Tokyo) on Monday!

23rd of January, 2002: What an amazing match! Magüi and Conchita defeated Coetzer/McNeil [10] 6-0 6-2!!!! wow! Congrats! and congrats to Magüi for making it to her first SF GS in doubles ever! Magüi and Conchita should play together more often. Now in the SF they will Sanchez-Vicario/Hantuchova [13] who defeated Krizan/Srebotnick [9] in the other QF. Scroll down for pics of the QF match!
I really like this pic:

A couple more pics for everybody to enjoy:
20th of January, 2002: Magüi and Conchita won their doubles match 6-2 6-1 and will now play in the Quarterfinals!!! This is such a great result! congrats to Magüi on her very first QF doubles appearance at a Grand Slam! On the next round they will play against the winner of the match between McNeil/Coetzer and Testud/Vinci, personally, I'd rather they played against the former... but we'll see. Today is a rest day for Magüi and Conchita, they will play their QF match on Tuesday.
A couple of pics of Magüi at the Australian Open (these were captured by Jorn from the AO netcam and posted at the WTAworld.com Board!)
19th of January, 2002: Unfortunately, Magüi lost to Elena Dementieva, but she's still in the doubles with Conchita, so good luck girls! Incidentally, Magüi Mania just made it past 10,000 visitors!! Congrats!
Here's a picture of Magüi in her 3rd round match against Dementieva (obviously it *is* rather hot down under!) - - also, from this pic, it seems that Magüi has changed her clothing sponsor to Lotto (used to be Nike)... will this be the end of our chances of seeing Magüi in ORANGE? (the official un-official Magüi Mania color), or will they increase? Should I e-mail the people at Lotto and demand they issue Magüi orange clothes?

17th of January, 2002: Magüi just defeated Maria Elena Camerin (ITA) 6-3 6-3, in the second round of the Australian Open! you can see the stats of that match here. In the third round, Magüi will play against Elena Dementieva (RUS), a very tough match, but hopefully, Magüi can defeat her too! On the doubles, Magüi and Conchita will play later today, best of luck to them, although that will be a really tough match too.
Update: Magüi and Conchita defeated Tulyaganova/Nagyova 7-6(4) 6-4! Congrats!! And they now play Dechy/Loit (FRA) in the second round. Best of luck! Tomorrow is a rest day for Magüi, who will not play until Saturday.
15th of January, 2002: Magüi, who is seeded 23rd, won yesterday her first round match at the Australian Open, she defeated Amanda Grahame (AUS) 6-3 6-3, you can see the stats of that match here. In the second round, Magüi will play against Maria Elena Camerin (ITA).
In the doubles, Magüi will be playing with Conchita Martinez, they are seeded 15th, and they will play Nagyova/Tulyaganova in the first round. As far as I know, these two have only played together for the Spanish Fed Cup Team.
Take a look at the draws:
Singles Draw.
Doubles Draw.
9th of January, 2002: Magüi and Asa are also out in the doubles, after defeating Oremas/Testud 6/7[5] 6/3 7/6[3] in the first round, they lost to Farina/Schett 6/7[0] 7/6[7] 6/3 in the quarterfinals. Pretty close in any case. Better luck in the next tourney: Australian Open, Magüi should be seeded (remember now there are up to 32 seeds in every GS).
7th of January, 2002: Well, Ms Raymond gave Magüi a bit of a spanking yesterday, Lisa Raymond def. Magüi Serna 6-1 6-1 (ouch!), well, it was a really tough match, and a very difficult draw, with the cut-off at No.28! better luck in Melbourne Magüi!
5th of January, 2002: Here it is! the draw of the first tourney of the year for Magüi... and it's going to be such a short one!! LOL! - oh well, Raymond on the first and if she wins, then Hingis... take a look for yourselves:

Magüi will start the year at Sydney (check the Adidas International crap website), where the draw isn't yet out, so no idea who she'll play in the singles or who she'll play with in the dubs, but watch this space for news!
