MAGÜI SERNA
NEWS

30th of September, 2002: Magüi is playing Moscow this week, she played in the qualifying this weekend and being seeded No.5 defeated Irina Selyutina 6-4 6-4 in the first round, Vanessa Henke 6-2 6-3 in the second and finally, Klara Koukalova 6-2 4-6 6-2 to earn a place in the main draw! Congrats Magüi!! Now keep going!!!

In the main draw she faces Paola Suarez in the first round, so good luck! and do take a look at the singles draw. in the doubles competition, this week Magüi plays with YET another partner: Rita Grande (although they HAVE played together before, I doubt there is anyone left on the whole tour that hasn't played with Magüi!!! ) they will play Villiers/Selyutina in the first round: check the doubles draw.

23rd of September, 2002: Well, it's not Magüi's year, she lost to Bedanova 3-6 6-4 6-4 in the last round of the qualifying. Magüi will play in the dubs with Nadia Petrova, who's a great player, so maybe they'll do well in the doubles!

22nd of September, 2002: Magüi played this morning the second match of the qualifying in Leipzig and defeated Blahotova 7-5 6-4! Congrats Magüi!!! Keep the momentum going for the last round of qualifying! she will face the winner of the match between Stefanie Gehrlein (GER) and Iveta Benesova (CZE) [7] in the final round of the qualifying. Good luck!

21st of September, 2002: Magüi played her first match today in the first round of the qualifying and she defeated Steinbach with a clear 6-2 6-4 win. Tomorrow, she faces Olga Blahotova (CZE), so good luck and get into the main draw!!!

20th of September, 2002: Magüi is back this week, and the qualifying draw is out, she faces Lydia Steinbach (GER) in the first round. Good luck!

29th of August, 2002: That's it folks! the 2002 US Open is now over for Magüi. Magüi and Barbara lost in 3 tight sets to the pair from the USA Harkleroad/Cargill. Now Magüi won't play again until Leipzig, a few weeks rest will do her well, and hopefully, she'll come back in top form, both fisically and mentally! See you at Leipzig (Germany) the week of Sept 23rd! until then, enjoy life!

28th of August, 2002: Bad luck for Magüi, she lost in the first round against qualifer Yoon Jeong Cho (KOR) 3-6 4-6, who moves past the first round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. Sometimes it's harder to face a qualifer, since they already have some matches under their belt, but still, a disappointing result for Magüi. She's still in the dubs competition, she plays with Barbara Rittner and they will play later on today against Ashley Harkleroad and Ansley Cargill. Good luck!

21st of August, 2002: Magüi did end up playing dubs at New Haven, pairing up with Conchita. Marsha, who was in the stands tells us that Magüi was poaching quite well, but that Conchita (and these are Marsha's words) "was very clearly tanking the match". Oh well, Magüi and Conchita ended up losing in the first round quite easily... Let's move on. Magüi plays now the US Open, the singles draw is out and Magüi will face a qualifier in the first round and if she wins, she will play Paola Suarez or Mary Pierce in the second round. Let's hope Magüi does well here! The dubs draw will be out the 27th of August, not sure who Magüi'll be playing with.

17th of August, 2002: Well, Magüi lost to Patricia Wartusch in a tight three setter, bad luck for Magüi. I am not sure if she'll stay in New Haven for the dubs or move directly to the US Open, but in any case, good luck and I hope this week off will help for the US Open.

16th of August, 2002: After losing in the first round of the dubs in Montreal (Rogers AT&T Cup), Magüi is already at New Haven (Pilot Pen Tennis Tier II), where she'll play the qualifying, her quarter of the qualifying is as follows:

Tina Pisnik (5), Slovakia, vs. Samantha Reeves, Monona, Wisc.
Angelika Roesch, Germany, vs. Jill Craybas, East Greenwich, R.I.

Rossana Neffade los Rios, Paraguay, vs. Anca Barna, Germany
Patricia Wartusch, Austria, vs. Magui Serna (8), Spain.

Good luck, Magüi!

13th of August, 2002: Magüi lost earlier today to Martina Hingis 4-6 3-6. I hope you guys got a chance to see the match on Eurosport, it was on live apparently. Not sure if they'll have it again in the "relive" tomorrow morning, but it might be worth checking if you have a telly! Bad luck for Magüi, but still three good wins in a row, and losing to Martina is hardly a bad result. Let's hope for a better draw in her next tourney. In the dubs, Magüi and Silvia Farina play Pratt/Molik later this evening. Good luck!

12th of August, 2002: Magüi defeated Rosana 6-3 2-6 6-2 and she moves onto the 2nd round, where she'll have to face Martina Hingis (eeek). Which is not as bad news as it could be, since Martina is coming back from an injury that has kept her away from the tour for months, so this might be Magüi's chance to get a good win, and a few bonus points wouldn't hurt her ranking! so good luck Magüi!!

11th of August, 2002: Magüi had to play the qualifying at the AT&T Montreal Open, beeing seeded No.7, she's already moved into the main draw, after defeating Rippner (USA) and Ko (CAN), check the qualifying draw. Now she will play Rosana N De los Rios in the first round of the main draw, In the doubles competition Magüi will be playing with Silvia Farina this week, who was lately playing with Schett, but now that Kournikova is back, Schett plays again with Anna, wonder when and if Anna and Hingis will play again and whether Silvia will then go back to playing with Schett? ... sorry, got carried away with the more "gossipy" part of the WTA tour . Anyhow, gooo Magüi!!!

6th of August, 2002: This week Magüi played the JP Morgan Chase Open (Los Angeles, USA), she played Husarova in the first round, and lost in a tight three setter 6-4 1-6 3-6. In the doubles, Magüi is still in, playing with Meghann after a long time of not partnering up with her, and they are already in the QF after defeating Coetzer/McNeil in the first round 6-4 7-5, they now play a very tough team: Hantuchova/Sugiyama. Best of luck in the dubs! This has not been a great year for Magüi so far, but let's hope she can still get some good results. Next on line is the AT&T Cup in Canada, this year is played in Montreal. Good luck!

24th of July, 2002: Hey everyone! Magüi is playing Sopot this week and she's doing fine! she's already in the QF after defeating Talaja 6-0 2-6 6-2 in the first round and Kandarr 4/6 6/2 6/3 in the second round, she now plays russian Safina for a place in the semifinals! Good luck. She is not playing dubs this week, but you can follow how the draws are going clicking here. I am currently doing a course on Management research at Harvard Uni (Boston), so that's why I haven't been updating, I hope you can follow what's going on using the links I have posted!

12th of July, 2002: Magüi lost in the QF to Arantxa in a tight three setter. In the dubs, Magüi and Vivi made it to the SF where they lost to Schwartz and Woehr 6-4 5-7 6-2, after defeating Denin and Martinkova in the first round and Kucerova and Stephens in the quarters. Now Magüi plays Fed Cup for Spain (with Arantxa, Marta and Vivi) in Mallorca next week, against the Germans (Muller, Rittner, Weingartner & Lamade), and after that, she goest to Sopot in Poland (clay) before moving to USA for the summer season of tennis. Good luck to Magüi!

10th of July, 2002: According to the BBC ceefax Magüi defeated Boogert 6-3 6-3 in the second round of the Brussels tourney and will now probably play Arantxa in the quarterfinals!

8th of July, 2002: Some good news from Brussels! Magüi def. Tathiana Garbin 6-4 3-6 6-4, and now faces either Boogert or someone from the qualifying in the 2nd round. Good luck Magüi!!! She is playing the doubles with Vivi Ruano this time, so it might be a good opportunity to do well here, since Vivi is one of the best doubles players out there and the one doubles title Magüi has won was precisely playing with Vivi. By the way, you can check the singles draw and the doubles draw in the Brussels tourney website.

7th of July, 2002: Magüi plays this week at the French Community Championships (Brussels) where she'll be seeded 5th and faces Tathiana Garbin (ITA) in the first round.

At Wimbledon, Magüi was not very lucky and lost in the first round to Rita Grande (ITA) in what was certainly not one of Magüi's best matches. She played the doubles with Alicia Molik but they also lost in the first round, although in this case, it was a very tight match that could have gone either way. Hopefully, there'll be some report from Wimbledon 2002 in the site sometime soon, just this time, it'll be about us more than ever, since Magüi didn't stay for long this year.
