Alderney is one of the smallest islands, which was occupied by the Germans from 1940 until the liberation in 1945. Like Guernsey and Jersey it was heavily defended but Alderney, as little as it is, was the most fortified island. 5 Coastal batteries, 22 Flak batteries, 13 strong points, 12 resistance nests, several defense lines and over 37.000 mines laid out all over the island.

The photographs were taken on my trip to Alderney last April 2004. From 150 photographs I selected 40, which you can find on this webpage. Due to bad weather conditions I was not able to access more remote positions.

Luckily without a fight, Alderney was liberated in 1945. A small island like Alderney, defended in such way, would have been a death-trap for invading troops!
