Sample Freshman's Essay - April 27, 1995

Art Spiegelman's narration of World War II using different animals was very original. The different ethnic groups are arranged in different dominance order, and they are represented by animals. Animals range in dominance due to how big, how aggressive, and how strong they are. Some animals serve as just moderators, they do not show dominance yet they get along better with one animal group than the other, due to the other animals' dominance.

In world War II the different groups of people dominated other groups because of nationality, ethnicity, religion or other beliefs reasons. The animals and the people are very similar in everyday life, so this is why Art Spiegelman used mice for Jews. They were the weaker and less apt to fight. Cats were used for the Germans because in the war the Germans ruled over the Jews, and the cats are always the dominant one when compared to mice. The dogs were the Americans, due to the fact that in everyday society dogs rule over cats, and in World War II the Americans eventually conquered and ruled over the Germans. The pigs were the Polish people, that sided with the Germans because the Germans treated them well. The Polish people did not like the Germans very much but they wanted to be on the winning side. The frog was used as a Frenchman who sided with a Jew. The Swedish people, who were characterized by reindeer, lived in neutral Sweden and were friendly to the Jews. The moth represented the gypsy in Poland that who foretold the future of the Jews and whomever whatever else one wanted to know. All of these animals were used to distinguish ethnic groups at the time of World War II. The animals were also having a lot of had different choices which brought on different consequences for their choice.

The mice were used to characterize the Jews. At the time of WW II the Germans hated the Jews and were constantly torturing and killing them. They were constantly forced to make choices on how to survive until the end of the war when they the survivors were to become finally freed. Some of the mice's tactics included hiding to escape the grasp of the cats, and bribery was common among the wealthier mice. Hard work also contributed to surviving. Throughout the war the mice were lied to, betrayed, tortured, and killed in hundreds of gruesome ways. They were lied to in such ways that would end up tricking them into getting killed. Starving the mice was the most common form of torture the cats used during the war, along with living in filth, extremely hard work, and being separated from loved ones. Killing the mice was daily occurrence. The cats used several methods to kill them such as gas, guns, starvation, and even suffocation which was carried out by literally cramming as many mice into a very small space as they could. The mice had no choice but to do what the cats said. They either did it or they would die.

The Germans were represented as cats. Cats are known to torture and kill mice. During World War II, the Germans hated the Jews mainly because of religious reasons. They served as scapegoats The cats in the story had many more advantages than the mice. The cats became wealthier by accepting bribes while the fortunes of the mice were being spent to save their own lives. The cats seemed to have so much power that other groups followed their lead. They did not always agree with the cats but were too afraid of becoming like the mice. After the war was finally over, the mice were so mentally scarred that they remained rationing food, and being very conservative with their money. This was all due to the years of torture they went through.

The pigs represented the Polish people who were one of the groups that followed the cats' lead. The pigs were split in their beliefs about the war. The majority of the pigs worked for the cats. This alliance of the pigs with the cats caused the mice to be enemies with the pigs as well as the cats. Some of the pigs, though, helped hide the mice from the cats. They kept them hidden until it was safe for the mice to try and escape to another country. These pigs, of course, were not members of the cat army. Some pigs did hold positions in the cat army, such as jailers, nurses and doctors, food distributors, or just a person who oversaw the activities of the mice. But some pigs that held positions did try and help the mice. Once again, the pigs were very split in their beliefs about the mice.

Dogs played a major role in the story. They represented the Americans in World War II. The main choice made by the dogs was to come in and conquer the Germans therefore freeing the Jews. With this choice they became the most powerful country at the end of World War II. The conquering of the Germans also made friends between the Americans and the Jews, therefore any friends of the Jews were the American friends. Even the Germans, as long as they were not soldiers, the Americans tried to get along with.

There was one frog in the story and he was a Frenchman that was in jail with the Jews. The frog became close friends with the Jew and they helped each other throughout the story. These choices made by the frog allowed his the Jew's stay in jail not as bad because the Jew frog helped the frog in many ways.

The Swedish people were characterized by reindeer. They became known towards the end of the story when some of the Jews were flown to Sweden at the end of the war. The reindeer bought stockings from the Jew who was a salesman for another Jew who owned a big store. This choice made by the reindeer enabled the Jew to get a job and start his life again after the war.

There was a Gypsy who played a small role in the story. The Gypsy was characterized by a moth. Gypsies usually were fortune tellers and so was this Gypsy except she was a moth. The moth foretold the fortune of a Jew by telling her of some past events, and one main future event was that she would be reunited with her husband.

Art Spiegelman's narration was very creative due to the fact that during World War II there was a lot of dominance shown by different ethnic groups. In everyday life animals in general show dominance to each other, and some animals will actually torture and kill other animals. These animals brought out the real aspect of how life was in World War II, due to the fact of all the choices that were made due to the domance groups during World War II.
