The Emergent and Canopy Levels
Objective: Students will be able to classify rainforest animals into the emergent and canopy levels.
Anticipatory Set: Who remembers some animals of the rainforest?
Materials
- "The Great Kapok Tree" by Lynne Cherry
- Meg the Monkey and song
- animal sheets
- glue
- large white sheets of paper
Procedure
- Review "I’m a Little Monkey" with Meg
- Review animals of the rainforest
- Discuss the emergent and canopy level of the rainforest using illustration on the board.
- For the canopy level refer to a canopy bed and draw a picture on the board.
- Have children say emergent and canopy a few times and check a few students for understanding throughout the lesson.
- Explain the project we will be doing, which will be folding a large piece of paper hamburger style and using the portion above the fold for the emergent level and under the fold for the canopy level.
- Show example of picture and in which level each animal is located and the colors used.
- Have helpers distribute materials.
- Collect Pictures for later use.

- Questioning throughout the lesson.
- Checking pictures for proper placement of animals.
