Animal Introduction Using a KWL Chart

 

Anticipatory Set- Who knows what science is? What animal do you see on the cover of this book? What are the things he is holding?

Objective- The students will be introduced to the K part of a KWL chart and start thinking about animals.

Materials

  • "Dandelion" by Morgan Freeman
  • chart paper
  • marker
  • construction paper for students picture

Procedure

  • I will ask students if they know what characters are and tell them to pay close attention to the characters in the book.
  • After each new character is introduced in the story I will ask the children if they know what animal it is.
  • After the story I will ask students to tell me about the book.
  • I will list the animals that they remember from the book, which will lead into The K part of the chart.
  • I will ask the students what they know about animals.
  • I will copy responses on the sheet.
  • We will talk about what all the animals had in common and introduce the word mammal.
  • I will have the students draw a picture of their favorite mammal.

 

What do you want to know about animals?

Anticipatory set- Raise your hand if you have been to the Pittsburgh zoo. What did you do at the zoo? Did you learn anything?

Objective- Students will learn the second part of the KWL chart and devise questions that they want to know about animals.

Materials

  • "A Trip to the zoo"
  • chart paper
  • markers
  • song- Found a Mammal

Procedure

  • Read the story asking questions about the animals as the family walks through the zoo. What is the family learning?
  • After the story ask what they learned at the zoo.
  • Introduce the second part of the chart
  • Have students ask questions about what they want to learn.
  • Give an example to get them started.
  • How do Polar Bears keep warm?
  • After taking questions practice "Found a Mammal"
