How do polar bears keep warm?

Anticipatory Set: Who remembers some of the animals we talked about?

Objective- Students will explain what keeps Polar Bears warm in the Arctic.

Materials

  • "Little Polar Bear" by Hans de Beer

Procedure

  • Have students sit in reading seats.
  • I will have the students create a definition of mammals as a review.
  • I will show the students the cover of the book and ask for predictions.
  • I will read the book reminding students to look for the different animals the bear meets
  • After the story I will ask what other animals did the polar bear meet?
  • Raise your hand if you think all these animals could survive in the cold Arctic?
  • Why do you think this?
  • How do you think the Polar Bear survives the cold weather and swimming in the icy water?
  • Write responses on paper.
  • Explain that polar bears have a layer of fat called blubber that keeps him warm.
  • I will ask students what they wear to keep warm?

 

 

Polar Bear Experiment

Anticipatory set- Who remembers what special thing the polar bear has to keep him warm?

Objective- Students will be able to experience what it is like to have a layer of blubber to protect them.

Materials

  • construction paper
  • clothing from magazines
  • sandwich bags
  • Crisco
  • bowl of water
  • ice cubes

Procedure

  • Talk about keeping warm as a review from the last lesson.
  • I will explain what the students will be doing at their seats.
  • Drawing pictures of clothing they wear to keep warm.
  • Fill up the paper
  • When finished sit on the carpet and read a book
  • Send them back to seats by table, and explain that they will be called back to do the experiment.
  • I will have all students experience the blubber glove.
  • After the completion of the experiment students will finish up project and move back to the carpet.
  • We will discuss what each student felt.
  • Refer to the chart and my question.
  • Ask if they remember what the chart is called?
  • What did we learn?
