The Undertsory and Forest Floor
Objective: Students will be able to identify the last two layers of the (understory and forest floor) rainforest and the animals that live there.
Anticipatory Set: Use Meg the Monkey to introduce the next two levels of the rainforest.
Materials
- Meg the Monkey and song ("I’m a Little Monkey")
- animals of the understory and forest floor sheets
scissors
- glue
- large paper
- crayons

Procedure
- Review the emergent and canopy level of the rainforest and introduce the understory and forest floor.
- understory- larger animals, some birds and butterflies, canopy blocks the sunlight
- forest floor- very little light, large mammals, fallen branches decaying animal
- Review all four levels once again calling on various students to reinforce understanding of all levels.
- Review animals on the sheets and where they belong in the rainforest.
- Start to color pictures for the second part of their projects
- The two projects should be stapled together to form the four levels of the rainforest
- Display the projects in the hall or on a bulletin board.
*Pictures will be completed the next lesson
Assessment
- Questioning during lesson.
- Checking if the pictures are in the correct place.
