The Undertsory and Forest Floor

Objective: Students will be able to identify the last two layers of the (understory and forest floor) rainforest and the animals that live there.

Anticipatory Set: Use Meg the Monkey to introduce the next two levels of the rainforest.

Materials

  • Meg the Monkey and song ("I’m a Little Monkey")
  • animals of the understory and forest floor sheets
  • scissors
  • glue
  • large paper
  • crayons

Procedure

  • Review the emergent and canopy level of the rainforest and introduce the understory and forest floor.
  • understory- larger animals, some birds and butterflies, canopy blocks the sunlight
  • forest floor- very little light, large mammals, fallen branches decaying animal
  • Review all four levels once again calling on various students to reinforce understanding of all levels.
  • Review animals on the sheets and where they belong in the rainforest.
  • Start to color pictures for the second part of their projects
  • The two projects should be stapled together to form the four levels of the rainforest
  • Display the projects in the hall or on a bulletin board.

  • Questioning during lesson.
  • Checking if the pictures are in the correct place.
