Lesson 1
"The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle
Objective: Students will be introduced to the life cycle of a butterfly and learn
about sequencing.
Anticipatory Set: How many of you have been so hungry you felt like you could
eat anything? Discuss.
Procedure:
- Read the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle stopping to review the stages the caterpillar is going through.
- Review the story with the students; introduce sequencing using words first second third, etc with the students.
- Next do sequencing of what happened to the caterpillar as he changed into a butterfly.
- Use picture cards to depict what happened to the caterpillar and have volunteers put these cards into order.
The Butterfly Song
(Tune: Up on the housetop)
First comes a butterfly and lays an egg.
Out comes a caterpillar with many legs.
Oh see the caterpillar spin and spin,
A little chrysalis to sleep in.
Oh, oh, oh, wait and see!
Oh, oh, oh wait and see!
Out of the chrysalis, my oh my,
Out comes a beautiful butterfly!
Make life cycle butterflies.
- Use butterfly patterns divided into 4 parts.
- Have students place rice for the egg, spiral pasta for caterpillar, shell pasta for chrysalis, bow tie pasta for butterfly.
7. Write words of the life cycle below pasta or have students copy from the board.

- rice, spiral pasta, shell pasta, bow tie pasta
- Butterfly patterns
- Butterfly Life Cycle Cards
- Crayons
- Glue sticks
