Objective: Students will be able to understand the concept of symmetry by
comparing symmetrical butterflies and creating their own.
Anticipatory Set: Everyone stand up, now imagine that someone drew an
imaginary line right down the middle of you. Would you have to
sides that are the same? Discuss and bring up the term
symmetry.
Procedure:
- Now I am going to read the book called "The Butterfly Alphabet Book by Brian Cassie and I want you to look at the many different butterflies and notice the colors and designs on the butterfly. Also pick one of your favorite butterflies.
- After reading the book and pointing out colors and designs have students tell about their favorite butterfly from the story.
- Ask the students if their butterfly is symmetrical and start a discussion again about symmetry while looking at the different butterflies in the story.
- Make sure students understand that all butterflies are symmetrical.
- Ask students to make their own butterfly that is symmetrical by using a variety of art materials and butterfly patterns.
