Where do Butterflies live and what do they eat?

Objective: Students will be able to identify where butterflies like to dwell and what they eat.

Anticipatory Set: Who likes flowers? Does anyone have a flower garden at home? What animals like to visit there? Have you ever seen a butterfly and tried to catch it? Discuss.

Procedure:

1. Introduce the book "Where Butterflies Grow" by Joann Ryder.
2. What do you think this book is about?
3. After reading the book ask what butterflies like to eat and where they lived in the story.
4. Ask if they think nectar and pollen is sweet? What are some things we eat that are sweet?
5. Mix sugar and water and let students taste the "nectar"
6. Make butterfly snacks

• Fill celery with peanut butter
• Add two pretzel wings
• Use pieces of pretzel for antennae
• Use raisins to decorate
• EAT!

• Napkins
• Plastic spoons
