Favorite Candy Bars

Anticipatory Set: Start talking about chocolate, the smell, favorite kinds etc.

Objective: The students will:

  1. Use the scientific method:
  1. Observing b) Classifying c) Data collection and record keeping d) Measuring
  1. Work in cooperative groups and use appropriate social skills.
  2. Analyze data to create a graph.
  3. Interpret, create and use visual images as a way of communicating.
  4. Gather information from surveying.

Procedure:

  1. Read The Big Block of Chocolate to the students.
  2. Let each student choose his/her favorite candy bar out of a Hershey variety chocolate bar bag.
  3. Create a graph according to the bars picked. Discuss the results.
  4. Set up the students in cooperative groups, can be based on interest of favorite candy or any other way.
  5. Let each group decide on a classroom to conduct a survey on favorite candy bars.
  6. Each group will need to write a letter to the class picked to explain the survey and to ask for a time to visit the classroom.
  7. After the students have completed the survey, the cooperative groups will design a pie graph or a bar graph with appropriate labeling.
  8. Each group will present their graph to the class and then display the graphs in the hallway.

 

Assessment

  1. Anecdotal records of cooperative groups.
  2. Bar graph or pie graph that was presented to the class from each group.
