Using the Multiple Intelligences to Teach Sight Words
Verbal-Linguistic
At the beginning of each week write 5 sight words on sentence strips. Introduce the words and put them in a pocket chart. Each time a word is used in class have someone come up and point to the word in the chart.
Have students underline the sight words of the week each time they use it in their writing.
Math-Logic
For students who need a mathematical connection have them associate a number with the sight word. For example the word from has 4 letters, so from=4.
Have students take 20 sight word cards and categorize them. Some possibilities are 3 letter words, words that begin with a vowel, or words with an "o" in them.
Spatial
Have students create word pictures in which they print the word on the page and draw a picture around the word.
Write a story or poem that has all the sight words in it and have students highlight them.
Bodily-Kinesthetic
Write the words in sand or have students make body letters to spell a word.
On a ball write the sight words and have students toss the ball to each other and the student has to say the sight word that is closest to their left thumb.
Musical
Have students highlight sight words in a fingerplay or song.
Have students spell a word using loud voices for consonants and a whisper for vowel. See if students notice spelling patterns.
Interpersonal
Have a group of students spell a sight word, one letter for each member.
Have letter cards or tiles of letters for students to spell with a partner. The student gives a sight word and their partner spells it out.
Intrapersonal
Give students a chance to study the words a few minutes each day.
Have students choose two words a day to include in a sentence or in their journal. Can also have an illustration. Have them relate their writing or illustration to what they like to do in the free time.
