Rooftop                                          Chapter 4

Jeff walked in to find Jay on the phone.

"Please, Max.", Jay pleaded into the receiver.

"Oh great.", Jeff thought to himself.  But instead of letting Jay talk to her in private, Jeff laid down on the bed and closed his eyes, pretending to go to sleep as he eaves dropped.

"At least get a room somewhere tonight.  Then I’ll pick you up in the morning and you can ride with me to the next show.  We can talk about things then.", Jay pleaded some more.

Jeff wished he could hear what Max was saying.  Was she being the tough girl that he had met only hours before or was she turning to putty and letting herself fall for Jay’s bullshit?  He hoped that she would stand up to him - but all he could do was hope.  The evening’s events replayed in Jeff’s mind as he continued to listen to his friends conversation.

"Please, Max.  I want us to work things out.  I don’t want to lose you."

Jeff was growing slightly angry at Jay - the nerve he had to actually sit and beg her to stay with him…only so that he could turn around and do the same thing again.  It just made him sick.

"Thank you.", Jay said relieved, "Call me in the morning.  I love you."

Jeff sighed - she had given in.  Jay hung up the phone and relaxed on the bed.

Jeff slid his eyes over to look at Jay, "So I take it she wants to work things out?"

Jay turned to Jeff and smiled, "I think with some convincing and a little groveling on my part, she’ll see the light.  She can’t refuse me.  I’m her weakness."

Jeff rolled his eyes at Jay and turned over to face the wall.

"What?", Jay asked innocently.

"Nothing!  Goodnight.", Jeff huffed as he pretended to fall asleep.  He couldn’t believe Jay’s gall.  The man actually had a girl like that, a girl like Max who obviously loved him and he treated her like he did.  Jeff just didn’t understand.  He struggled with the notion of actually finding someone like Max for himself as he drifted off to dream.

The phone woke the guys early the next morning.

"Hello?", Jeff answered groggily.

"Is Jay there?", Max asked sternly.

Jeff’s eyes widened with his realization of the caller’s identity.

"It’s for you.", Jeff said handing the phone to Jay without another word to Max.

"Hello?", Jay said sleepily into the phone, "Okay.  Where are you?……I’ll be there in a few."

Jeff jumped up out of bed and headed to the bathroom.

"Hey, Jeff?  You don’t mind catching a ride with someone else to the next show do you?  So I can be alone with Max and work my magic?", Jay asked with excitement in his voice.

"Man, whatever!", Jeff said going into the bathroom and shutting the door.  Not only does he now have to think about Jay wooing Max back into his world of deception, but he now had to bum a ride.
