Chapter 6

Max threw the door open and stepped out into the fresh air taking a deep breath.  She walked down the steps and towards the car.  As loud screams sounded from behind her, she turned to watch the scene.  Car after car pulled into the lot bringing in the wrestlers.  Each time someone stepped out of a car, the screams seemed to get louder.  Was this what he did every night?  She couldn’t even imagine.  But what she couldn’t imagine more, was that she didn’t know this at all.  She was beginning to realize that she hadn’t been there for Jay as she should have.  They were never truly together.  Maybe she didn’t really love him…only the convenience of him.  Her mind was going a mile a minute as she tried to make it all make sense.  The crowd had settled down a bit.  That is until the arena door opened - the sound was almost deafening.  Max looked over to see Jay followed by the three guys she had left standing in the dressing room.  The quartet walked over to the crowd and began to shake hands, pose for pictures and sign autographs.  She was completely amazed.

"JEFF!!!", she heard someone yell .

She watched as the blue haired man walked over to a young girl, stretching out his arms to hug her.  The poor girl was shaking.

"Jeff.", Max said under her breath.  She had remembered hearing Jay talk about him from time to time.  Had Jeff known who she was the night before?  Max shook her head and realized that Jeff was looking at her.

"What?", Max mouthed to him.

A huge smile crept across Jeff’s face and then he turned to greet another fan.  Something in his smile warmed Max’s heart.  What was with this guy?

"What are you doing out here?", Jay asked pulling Max from her gaze.

Again, the guard went up, "I needed some air."

"I got worried when I couldn’t find you.", Jay told her.

"Yeah.  I can tell.", Max said cutting her eyes to the crowd.

"Come on, Max.  This is my job.", Jay pleaded, "But then, you wouldn’t know that would you?"

How dare he?  He was the villain here, not her…or so she thought.  Max crossed her arms and sighed loudly.

"I’ll tell you what, Max.  When you decide that you want to be a part of my life, and get over all of this…you know where you can find me.", Jay spat just before turning and going back inside.

Max was appalled.  Sure, she deserved the shot about not being a part of his life, but….get over it?  HE was the one who had cheated, not her.  He had some nerve. Max suddenly felt the need to get away from that whole scene.  Almost frantically, she looked around until she saw a door marked "roof access".  Walking quickly, she opened that door and practically ran up the four flights of stairs until she was on the roof.  Something about standing on a rooftop made her feel a little more safe.  She stood close to the ledge, closed her eyes and took a deep breath.  Max spent a while thinking about her life - about her career, her relationship with Jay or lack there of, about everything.

The sky was growing dark and the air a little cooler as day turned to evening.  Max was so enchanted by the night’s first stars that she didn’t hear the door to the roof creak open behind her.  Jeff had come up to the rooftop to get away and clear his head before the show, just as he always did.  He was delightfully surprised to find Max there but didn’t let her know that he was there.  He only stared at her as he fought the feelings that were brewing inside of him.

As Max took a deep breath and sighed, the visitor let his presence be known causing Max to jump, "Imagine, finding you here."

Startled, she turned quickly to see his face and was relieved at who she found.  She smiled, "Did you follow me up here?"

Jeff’s smile faded a bit, "No.  I didn’t even know you were up here.  We thought you left hours ago."

Max felt bad for assuming that he was there to see her, "I’m sorry.  I just thought……nevermind.  Hours?  I’ve been gone that long?"

"Yep", Jeff returned with a nod.

Max turned her gaze back to the night’s sky, "It only seems like I’ve been here for a few minutes.  It’s so peaceful."

Jeff walked over and stood beside her, himself turning his face up to look at the stars, "YES, it is."
